Nageswara Swamy Temple, Chebrolu - Guntur

Sri Nageswara Swamy Temple, Chebrolu, Guntur District is situated at 16˚ 11’ 43.71” North Latitude and 80˚ 31’36.96 ” East Longitude. Chebrolu village is a mandal head quarters located at a distance of 14 kms on Guntur – Ponnur road in Guntur District. Chebrolu is mentioned as Tamrapa, Tamrapuri and Chembolu in the inscription. The Nageswara Swamy temple dedicated to Siva is the biggest temple in the town. On plan, the temple consists of garbhagriha, arthamandapa, mahamandapa, Dhwaja sthambha and gopura. On either side of the gopuram inside lie Navagraha mandapam and Vahanasala on the left and right sides. The Garbhalaya is square on plan and installed with a Sivalinga. The arthamandapa is rectangular on plan and houses the processional images of the god. The door frames are carved with dwarapalas on each side and the lintel is carved with a Gajalakshmi motif. Next is the mahamandapa supported by 16 pillars carved in Kakatiya style. On vertical axis, the temple consists of adhisthana, padavarga and prasthara built of stone on which there is a two storied vimana built of brick in Kakatiya style. The Rajagopuram is a 5 storied one consists of Upapeetha, adhisthana, padavargam and prastharam built of stone in Kakatiya style. The superstructure is built of brick on which ornamental stucco work is seen. The superstructures of the Vimanam and Gopuram were renovated by Raja Vasireddy Venkatadri Naidu, the Zamindar of Amaravati. On the left side at the entrance of the gopura is a huge stone inscription of Jayapa Senani, the Military General of Kakatiya Ganapati Deva dated to 13th century A.D.

The temple dates back to 15 century. The Shiva Linga was excellent. Very ancient temple and one can see the 2 Sasanas at the entrance of the temple itself. Very big Raja Gopura also present. But the behaviour of the priest is not good. When I enquired about its story and other things he replied with regret which hurted me.so I am giving 4 stars due to behaviour of priest

Chebrolu is a small village near to Guntur. It has many historical temples like Chaturmukha Brahma Lingeshwara, Nageswara Swamy, Nandiswara, Veerabhadra etc. If you are at Guntur or Vijayawada spend half day here.
