It has a total water filtering capacity of 1910 MLD (Million Liters per Day). This plant works 24 hours a day, all 7 days a week and 365 days a year non stop.
The entire area is well protected and the entry restricted.
The treatment plant receives water from vaitarna dam.
The quality of the water treated is highly controlled and checked at regular intervals for various parameters, especially the turbidity. A special laboratory is devoted for testing the purified water which works throughout day and night in shifts.
All the water purified is supplied to entire Mumbai via four large pipes.
The water is purified in a step wise manner: first the water from the dams is collected in a inlet bay where precipitating agent like PAC is added to water which helps to precipitate the impurities in water.
The water is then transferred to a clarifier that has two central rotating blades which help to clarify water by precipitating impurities.
Water is further transferred into small tank that has a bed of fine and coarse gravel at the bottom. The pores in the coarse gravel are about the size of 0.5-0.7 mm and the pores in the fine gravel are about the size of 0.2-0.4 mm. Most of the impurities are removed at this step.
The purified water is then chlorinated and it ready to be supplied for use or stored temporarily either for any emergency or majorly for backwashing.
The quality of the water supplied is as high as that of drinking water.
The supplied is used for all general purpose throughout the Mumbai.
The area around the filtration plant has very good scenery.
A visit to the water treatment plant is overall a very good experience.
