UPSC opens gate to some of the most coveted posts in India, which makes it also one the most difficult exam in the country. Given the nature of the UPSC preparation, it is not just enough to study hard, it is equally important to study with a plan.

Diversion, disturbance and distraction are commonplace in UPSC preparation and at times overshadow the actual study itself. Even the Toppers admit to get distracted from time to time. But they ultimately succeeded by coming back to the path from where they got distracted and work even more fiercely to cover up for the lost time. The others, who fail, are the ones who dismantle all their plans and schedules in anxiety and fear after the distractions. It is ultimately a matter of personal will and effective mentoring that makes the distraction a break, a moment of rejuvenation for Toppers while it is a source of frustration leading to failure for the others.

Deriving learning from these personal accounts, it is highly advisable that a time bound plan be made and be followed strictly and repeatedly.

Many toppers suggest that large portions should be broken down into smaller weekly targets. One should only focus on the weekly target and analyze status at the end of each week. If the target is unachieved, the schedule must be analyzed for the reason for the same. There may be a need to adjust the targets based on familiarity with the subject, nature of the subject etc. Initially, for few weeks the student would find it cumbersome but slowly the technique will prove to be very effective.

Apart from these, some Golden Rules can be followed to improve rate of success:
1.  Keep a fixed and uncompromised schedule for daily studies. Regular habit of studying will prevent distractions.
2.  Keep small, but time-bound targets. They will give a sense of achievement and motivation.
3.  Follow Test Series and Assignments seriously. It is important to keep a track of progress.
4.  Attend all Classes and Discussions rigorously. It takes much more time to cover-up the same portion that is missed in the class.
5.  Keep a note of what you have studied so far and what you will be studying in future. This will ensure that no portion goes unnoticed before the exam.
6.  Keep a realistic list of material that you intend to refer. Too many sources may cause anxiety and unnecessary pressure. Once the list is set, revise the material as many times as the schedule would allow. Revising from familiar sources is faster and improves retention.

Finally, ‘ALC IAS Classes’ wish you a very Good Luck for your preparation and the examination.
