We were blown away by the Swaminarayan Akshardham, a huge complex set on a 100-acre site. It was built in only five years by craftsmen and volunteers and inaugurated Nov. 6, 2005. The main structure, 141 feet high, 316 feet wide and 356 feet long, includes 300,000 hand-carved stones, 234 ornate pillars, 20,000 statues and statuettes, nine domes and 20 pinnacles. The light show is one of several attractions. It blends lasers, lights, fire, fountains, animations, video projection and live interaction and is amazing. Others (which we didn’t see) include a 50-minute show with robotic statues and films with messages of non-violence, honesty, family, harmony, faith in God and others; a 40-minute large format film theatre showing a film shot in 108 locations in India with a cast of over 45,000; and a 12-minute boat ride portraying India’s heritage. There’s also a “holy pond” with the “holy waters of 151 sacred rivers, lakes and step-wells of India” flowing through 108 bronze water spouts representing “the 108 auspicious names of God.” Note that phones, cameras, purses and bags have to be checked at the entrance. It is possible to have a photo taken (for purchase) inside and a well-illustrated book is available for purchase -- both for low prices.

Have been passing by for several years. But never thought of getting in and feel the presence of this beautiful monument, kept assuming unlike other tourist places in the city!! However, it is beyond what i use to think of the place. An outstanding display of Architecture and the essesnce of thousand of years exploring Spiritualism. You can capture the beauty on in your memories not phone cameras. No device allowed inside the compound. Beautiful store inside the campus and food corner with the wide range of Indian food.

Swaminarayan Akshardham (New Delhi) is a Hindu temple, and spiritual-cultural campus in New Delhi, India. The temple is close to the border with Noida. Also referred to as Akshardham Temple or Akshardham Delhi, the complex displays millennia of traditional and modern Hindu culture, spirituality, and architecture. Inspired by Yogiji Maharaj and created by Pramukh Swami Maharaj, it was constructed by BAPS.[1] The temple[2] was officially opened on 6 November 2005 by Pramukh Swami Maharaj in the presence of Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, Manmohan Singh, L.K Advani and B.L Joshi.[3][4] The temple, at the centre of the complex, was built according to the Vastu shastra and Pancharatra shastra. In Swaminarayan Akshardham New Delhi, similar to its predecessor Swaminarayan Akshardham in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, the main shrine is the focal point and maintains the central position of the entire complex. There are various exhibition halls which provide information about the life and work of Swaminarayan. The designers of the complex have adopted contemporary modes of communication and technology to create the various exhibition halls.[5]
