Bagnan High School, established in 1854, is one of the oldest schools of our state. Being established three years before the establishment of University of Calcutta, this school bears a rich tradition of imparting not only quality teaching but also patriotism as well as social awareness. The school was run in this old building for some years during the pre independence era before it was shifted to its more spacious present premises near Bagnan Railway Station. Before being transformed to a school, this building was said to be a 'Nil-Kuthi'...the residence of any English owner of some indigo plantation. Bagnan High School is remembered in history for participation of its teachers and students in India's Freedom Movement. Elderly residents of Bagnan fondly remember this building as shelter of great Martyr 'Bagha Jatin' (Jatindranath Mukhopadhyay, the great revolutionary) on his way to Chandipur, in Orissa, where he and his followers bravely fought against the British Police. The notorious British Police Officer, Charles Tegart, raided and searched this building while he came to this building following Bagha Jatin. But by that time Bagha Jatin had already left the place.
