With CFC Family...❤️❤️?? A year after massive protests were launched by members of the warkari sect over imminent damage to a hillock they consider holy at Khed, the state government has now declared it to be a pilgrimage site, indicating that several privileges could be extended towards it. Bhamchandra Dongar in Khed taluka is synonymous with the life and literature of Sant Tukaram Maharaj, and was earlier an anointed ‘State Protected Heritage Site’. Yet, rampant excavation work was taking place at this hillock, as well as Bhandara Dongar at Maval — mining, construction and heavy industry had become a major threat at these spots. While protests were launched in this regard, the state government has months down the line included the Bhamchandra hillock, temples and surrounding holy zone on its list of pilgrimage sites, garnering a Grade-C status under this header as of Saturday (July 6). With this latest tag, the location is now privy to an annual sum of Rs 1 crore from the state for development and preservation. The availability of an annual development fund is also like to resolve land acquisition issues here, which were closely intertwined with the construction against which protests had taken place. Bhamchandra Dongar, named after Lord Shiva, is known for an ancient cave temple; it is also fabled that Tukaram Maharaj used to meditate in the Sant Tukaram Dhyan Gumfa here. Further, two stone-carved water tanks, ancient idols of Goddess Parvati and a Shivlinga are part of the shrine. Every year lakhs of warkaris visit during their annual Palkhi procession. Zilla Parishad (ZP) member Sharad Butte-Patil, who is also president of the Bhamchandra Dongar Vikas Samiti, said, “We had followed up with the help of local villagers to provide the pilgrimage tag to this site. Finally, we have received the status. We will appeal to all industries and local landowners to exclude some portion of their lands from development, so that our hillock can be protected.” The said Dongar was declared a protected monument in 2011 by the state, including a portion of private land on the hill owned by local farmers. Later, half the portion was excluded from the protected area by the authorities. Soon, farmers also sold their lands to private entities and developers, which resulted in construction activities taking off in full swing. To save their natural, historical and spiritual monument, warkaris from Bhalchandranagar, Vasuli, Warale, Shindegaon, Askhed Khurd, Bhamboli, Shelu, Sawardari, Ambethan, Khalumbre and Mhalunge had formed a ‘Santbhumi Sanrakshak Sangharsh Samiti’ to protest the goings-on.

Nice hiking place to a pilgrimage site. The place of Sant Tukaram where he got enlightenment. Foothill is easy to reach by road from there it's hike (can be rated moderate to difficult) . There are two temples on the top and a residents hall of sadhakas.
