★ ★ ★ ★ ★ How can I even begin to describe what Bharatiya Bhavan meant to me. It was where I grew up and lived for over 3 decades from 70s to late 90s. The massive compound encompassing 6 buildings was a dream as kids (we all had nicknames like chittu(me), chuki, chotu, jitu, chikku etc and my god, were we a noisy gang), with huge spaces to play and gather. The compact 1 and 2 bedroom flats were solidly built and it was fantastic having so many trees lining our complex. My favorite memories were playing Holi, Sunday club by Asha aunty and ofcourse the event of the year was the Ganesha's pooja for 5 days and everyone participated with gusto. There was a huge camaraderie amongst the neighbors and some of us have continued to stay in touch!
The location was amazing too, the 214 busdepot next door
Most of us kids moved on in the late 90s, as did the residents from early 2000s and there were always rumours of the place being broken down into something flashy and new. Its 2022 now and yet the buildings remain! It is often given to shooting ads, OTT series (Family Man, Choked: Paisa Bolta Hai etc) and even movies and it's always a thrill to see the colony in it's current shabby glory and the shiny new redeveloped buildings around.
I don't live in Mumbai anymore, but the few times I visited, I went to check the place out and left with a lump in my throat. I sometimes wish I were still living there, but such is life. There are beautiful memories which will stay with me till the end. I've always fantasized that if broken down, the space be converted into a large public park for the community to enjoy! if wishes were horses :-)
