★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The old heritage stone built BMC Bhuleshwar Market is a treasure house for imitation traditional jewellery. This is just off Kalbadevi Rd. The shops say wholesale but most of them are willing to sell in retail quantities, even one piece if you want to buy. Prices are cheap compared to elsewhere and the range and variety of traditional designs is pretty good. Bargaining is of course the norm.
This is a must go to place if you need to buy especially in bulk for gifting, or even if you want a collection of traditional look jewellery which you can wear on crowded streets without fearing that your chain will be snatched or you'll be mugged! Or even if you want to wear something traditional and fancy to any function without spending too much.
When they are new, they look quite real. White metal silver look stuff is also there as are hair accessories, baubles etc. The same jewellery is also available in the narrow gullies just outside the market building. Outside you will also get saris, kurtis, jooties and other accessories, sari borders, ready made sari blouses and what have you at quite reasonable prices. Some street vendors specialise in surplus saris which if you are lucky, can be really good pieces at rock bottom rates.
Bear in mind that Bhuleshwar and Kalbadevi get VERY CROWDED as the day progresses, making it difficult to walk in the congested narrow lanes filled with people, hath gadis, coolies etc. To beat the crowds, its best to go as soon as the market shops open from around 11:30 onward.
