Message from the Secretary

Cancer Care India, completed its journey of 20 long years on the 26th of November 2020. A journey that started with a few visionaries to come together to form a common platform for Cancer Support groups in India and abroad. And slowly and gradually it grew to be the only one of its kind, the largest support group in the Indian Sub Continent.

I was introduced to CACI by our past General Secretary Dr.Rita Banik,(Founder President of Race to rein- in- Cancer) her dedication and passion to work for the cause was so commendable that there was no looking back. A brave fighter who left behind her dreams to be accomplished with the flame of her strength burning bright to cut through the darkness into light. I shall ever remain grateful to Dr.Rita Banik to have given me such a big, warm, wonderful family of CACI, where it is believed “together we shall overcome”, “each one touch one” “We Can, We Will”.., The best part of CACI is each group has the support of other groups when it comes to counselling and second opinion, doctor’s references, discussions and sharing about the latest treatment available. The most amazing part is that everybody responses immediately and the patient/relative doesn’t have to wait and there is no waste of time. Member groups even come forward to give financial aid to patients for their treatment recommended by other groups.

Cancer Care India has been able to give financial aid to its needy member groups for their projects through SUNSHINE Fund. This fund is generated as a Hand Holding project of Cancer Care India, here member groups come forward and donate voluntarily towards the SUNSHINE FUND, the sole motto being holding hands, and making one feel we are not alone!

We as the members of Cancer Care India have a huge responsibility and duty towards the society at large with the disease increasing by the day.

Through CACI, one would come to know the extensive work of Cancer awareness Programmes (CAP) undertaken by the National Cadet Corps (NCC) with Cancer Care India. NCC is the largest youth force in the world. CACI and NCC have jointly launched the ‘Nation-wide Cancer Awareness Programme’ (CAP) on 26th May 2003. The call of the hour is spreading cancer awareness messages, a number of motivated cadets through their ‘Community development and Social Service Programmes’, are spreading the following messages of cancer awareness:

-CANCER IS PREVENTABLE
-CANCER IS CURABLE
-CANCER IS NOT CONTAGIOUS
-THERE IS LIFE AFTER CANCER
-DO NOT GET SCARED OF CANCER, BUT FIGHT CANCER.

According to a number of national and international cancer experts, Cancer Awareness Programmes (CAP) jointly by CACI and NCC (National Cadet Corps) is the largest anti Cancer campaign in the world.

The Nationwide Cancer Awareness Program (CAP) jointly by CACI and NCC is the Flagship of CACI. We must take it forward.

A number of member groups of CACI regularly and actively associate NCC cadets in World No Tobacco Day on 31st May, National Cancer Awareness Day on 7th November and Survivors Day on 2nd Saturday in February every year.

The Pandemic today has brought all the crusaders under one roof of quality “Webinar”/s, through which there were and are more exchanges of knowledge, and awareness programmes. We came more closer, there were more exposure to different activities of all the groups. The Pandemic couldn’t dampen our spirit to move on. We have to remember that our cause is over and above everything.

The GBM is the only common platform for member groups to exercise their freedom of expression and speech and thereby arrive at conclusions for problems common for all the groups.

I sincerely thank all our well wishers, friends, donors, doctors, media and the NCC for their continuous support and patronage for helping us reach where we are today .

It is my honour, as founder president of Cancer Care India (CACI), an apex body for cancer support organizations in the country, to welcome you to our website and briefly acquaint you with our charter and activities.
CACI was founded in November 2000 by people working as volunteers in cancer support organizations, many with a personal experience of cancer. It was a response to the urgently felt need to come together to combat the growing menace of cancer in our country. While currently it is estimated that there are 15-20 lakh of people with cancer at any one time, with 8 lakh being added every year, by 2010 the numbers are expected to double. The majority, sadly, come with late stage disease.

Accordingly, the first task that CACI set itself was to alert people to the early warning signs of cancer. Towards this end, it joined hands with the National Cadet Corps (NCC), an organization with the largest disciplined youth force in the world, and launched a nation wide cancer awareness programme in May 2003. Numerous workshops and quiz competitions have been held since then to inform NCC cadets and motivate them to spread the message of cancer awareness and early detection as part of their community development programmes. I am happy to say that these have now become regular feature of NCC activity.

Member groups of CACI, currently 27 in number representing 13 states and union territories of India and one in Kathmandu, Nepal, are also to be congratulated for the various beneficial programmes they run for those affected by cancer. These help cope more effectively with their disease and its treatment, regain a sense of normalcy and also strengthen the will to live and fight back.

I am confident that with the setting up of a website, CACI will be able to reach out to many more people and organizations who share our purpose and mission. We urge you to join ands with us for we can not do it alone.

Warm regards

Harmala Gupta
