In Bengal, Criminal Investigation Department (CID) came into existence on 1 April 1906 under Mr. C.W.C. Plowden. The first head of CID after Independence was H.N. Sarkar,IPJP. The Headquarter of CID is situated at Bhabani Bhaban, 31 Belvedere Road, Alipore, Kolkata. At present, CID West Bengal is headed by Sanjoy Mukherjee, IPS, Addl. Director General of Police.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Bhawani Bhawan at Alipore finally started functioning as the West Bengal Police headquarters. Kolkata Police always had one in Lalbazar ever since its formation back in 1856. The state police has now moved into the historic Bhawani Bhawan - another colonial edifice, like the Kolkata Police's Lalbazar headquarters - which was earlier called Anderson Building. In this building you can find out several important government offices like Criminal Investigation Department (WB), Office of Director General & Inspector General of West Bengal, Office of Inspector General of South Bengal. Office of Director General Armed Police, Alipore Registry Office, District Consumer Court, State Human Rights Commission, State Minorities Commission, State Minorities Finance & Development Corporation, State Cooperative Service Commission etc.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Headquarters of West bengal police. This place known as BHAVANI BHAVAN. DG And IGP of west bengal police office here and also CID west bengal office also here. But the employee behavior isn't satisfactory, they unable to help people, who came for his official work. The Special Cell don't know how to handle file. Moreover, speed of action is poor.
