EXPOSURE & RESPONSE PREVENTION (ERP)

ERP is a form of behavioral therapy. It is an evidence-based practice that has been proven in research studies to be the most effective therapy in the treatment of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). You cannot always control your incoming thoughts and feelings, but you can control how you behaviorally respond to them. Since thoughts, feelings and behaviors are interrelated, if you change your behavior then your thoughts and feelings will follow. For example, imagine a man who is depressed and has been laying on his couch for days. He says to himself, “I will get off my couch and do something when I feel better.” If this person decides to change his behavior by getting off the couch and taking a walk, he will probably notice that his mood will lift as a result. ERP for OCD is a ‘facing your fears’ approach. If we are exposed to anything with enough frequency, we eventually habituate to it. Habituate means ‘to acclimate to’ or ‘get used to’ something. In OCD, a person may have an obsession that he will become contaminated by touching a door knob. Another may fear that having a thought about stabbing someone may mean she will actually do it. In ERP therapy, we create exposure assignments that encourage repeated access to feared objects or thoughts, which results in an eventual decrease in anxiety, guilt and distress. When an individual has an unwanted thought, feeling or physical sensation, he or she will often respond by engaging in compulsions or rituals to neutralize the potential of that fear occurring. When doing exposures in ERP therapy, we must also be sure to reduce your neutralizing rituals. Rituals prevent habituation from occurring. In other words, when you perform a compulsion you reinforce the idea that the fear is legitimate and that you cannot tolerate it which makes your OCD more powerful. Pairing exposure with response prevention is pivotal in teaching your brain how to respond differently when your obsessions show up. Your thoughts do not have the power to hurt you beyond just being very uncomfortable.

COGNITIVE BEHAVIOUR THERAPY

We all have distorted thinking from time to time. Cognitive Therapy focuses on changing what you say to yourself internally, so that you can change how you feel and behave. Individuals with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) commonly fall into cognitive traps which leads to increased anxiety, guilt and distress. We will teach you how to notice when you fall into problematic thinking patterns in regards to your OCD. Common cognitive distortions in OCD are ‘catastrophizing,’ ‘all or nothing thinking,’ ‘thought-action fusion,’ and ‘confirmation bias,’ among others. Core beliefs are developed through life experiences and / or by membership in particular groups. People often share the same core beliefs as others in their family of origin. You share the same core beliefs as other individuals with OCD. An example of a core belief held by people with OCD is “All my thoughts are really important,” or “The world is a dangerous place.” An individual’s core beliefs are what guide his real-time interpretations of himself, others and the world around him. When you learn to identify your automatic interpretations of your current situations, then you are then able to challenge your distorted thoughts and engage in reality-testing. Maybe your spontaneous interpretation was distorted and caused more unwarranted fear. We will teach you a technique called Cognitive Restructuring that will help you to identify and challenge your distorted OCD thinking patterns and create openness to more rational, evidence-based thinking. This can help to decrease anxiety and encourage exposure behaviors that ultimately reduce.

My mother searched on google for OCD treatment and she connected me with emotion of life . I had pure O-OCD with low self esteem and unhealthy perfectionism. I approached 3 psychiatrist and 2 counselors for solving my issue but was not satisfied with there method and was not able to see much results even after 2 years . I had the biggest impact of OCD on my academics and social live . I was offered 90 session plan with extra 30 days of relapse management . So far I have availed 45 session and I feel to have recovered by 80-90% . My experience with emotion of life was excellent . Till now I have recovered my OCD from moderate to mild level and have gain some control over my unhealthy perfectionism . I still have to work on my personality dynamics like self esteem and have to proceed with relapse management. I am sure that I will be able to cure this up to 99% . I am sure that I will be able to recover from this before the given timeline of 90 days . Based on my experience with emotion of life I would recommend others to believe in the process and be assured that you will recover as OCD is a curable disease ALL THE BEST !

During COVID lockdown, when one day my son came to me and told me that mummy I am suffering from OCD. I was shocked and asked him to "what is that." Becoz previously I could not heard about OCD and also did not know about it. So when I got to know that my son is suffering from checking-rechecking and chain of intrusive thoughts, initially he started taking consultation from various therapists and Drs. He took medicines for 1.5 yrs, little bit recovered and revert back again. Due to OCD, he was unable to concentrate on his studies as well as his daily routine. He always felt low, anxious, sad, unhappy, lonely etc etc. His mind was always flooded with lots of negative thoughts. He was battling anxiety and depression which impacting his mental and emotional life too. I was very much upset that from where I get help. I searched for various non medicine options for OCD on Google and came to know about Emotion of Life. I talked to Dr. Shyam Gupta sir and told the whole things about my son. He then talked to my son and recommended to have sessions of 100 days for 100 percent recovery from OCD My son joined the therapy session on 16th Aug,2021 and after 3-4 weeks sessions, I started noticing 20-25 percent improvement in him. But my son did not take regular sessions in 2-3 months, the result was that his recovery process became slow, but even though Shyam sir was always there for help him. He handled my son's case with very utmost care. He is really a nice, helpful and supportive person and always available for him 24*7 for any kind of help. Now my is taking regular classes from him for the last one and half months and I saw 70-80 recovery in his checking-rechecking behaviour. His intrusive thoughts are also going slow down. I have a full faith on him and till now he is looking forward to complete his journey. Based on my experience, I suggest to all, if anyone is suffering this kind of things, I will recommend him/her to contact EOL to overcome from him with this mental and emotional trauma and change your life.

I was suffering from contamination OCD since last 14 years. During my initial days I was unaware that I have OCD but in 2019 I got to know of it. At first I consulted some psychiatrists but was of no help. Then I visited Central Institute of Psychiatry that was also of no help. Then one day during November 2021 I got to know about Emotion of life. I got to know about Shyam Sir. He is a very sweet person and handled my case with utmost care. Now I am in recovering phase. I have been under his guidance since last one month as before it I had problems to connect with him. I can see my recovery in last one month. Thank you Shyam Sir and Team.

Our Daughter had been diagnosed with OCD a few months ago, we visited a psychotherapist whose services did help her to some extent, but after a while her therapist suggested that she would recommend medication in addition to her regular therapy. We were not in favour of having her starting medication just yet, and were hoping there could be another way we could help her, this is how we then came across Shyam Gupta Sir from Emotion of life and we think this is a real blessing as after only 30 sessions with Shyam Sir and his assigned therapist we see a big improvement in our daughter. Shyam Sir is very approachable and supportive, he and his team spent several hours/days in evaluation and assessment itself, which gets him to completely understand the case, leaves no room for error. His approach is very systematic, and his dedication and skill is exemplary. Our daughter still has a few months to go in therapy and we are positive that it will only help her further. We look forward to the time that she will be completely OCD free after completing around 150 sessions, but being in the able hands of Shyam Gupta Sir and his complete holistic approach, we don't have any doubt about it. We would definitely recommend anyone suffering from OCD to get in touch with Emotion of life, and Shyam Sir. You won't be disappointed
