Shying away from whipping up an Italian risotto because Arborio retails for about Rs 500 a kilo? We found a hidden gem in Shivaji Market, Camp that retails a variety of condiments, pastes, cheese, deli meats and ingredients necessary for your next international cuisine... for a much cheaper price than popular gourmet stores.
Wedged between a butcher shop and frozen food store in Shivaji Market, Foodman doesn’t boast the best spot in the market. However, what it does have is an inventory chock-a-block with products that you’ll only see at a gourmet speciality store, at agreeable prices.
We stumbled upon the store looking for ingredients for a risotto. From pre-packaged chicken stock, Arborio rice and Parmesan – we got it all at one spot, but for two-thirds of the price, we’d pay elsewhere. We got a kilo of Arborio for Rs 300! Apart from a staggering variety of rice (jasmine, black, paella, sushi) and noodles (soba, udon, glass and different types of pasta), you can also pick up a variety of condiments like gochujang, miso, different types of mustard, oils, a variety of canned meats to name a few. They also sell deli meats like bacon, ham, sausages, and a variety of cheese, dried mushrooms and sauces.
If you’re looking for some exotic vegetables to go with your haul, walk out and you’ll be in the exotic section of the market. We scored two avocados, a packet of mushroom and bunch of basil for a princely sum of Rs 85!
If you don’t want to make a trip to the market, Foodman will also deliver the products to your doorstep.
