★ ★ ★ ★ ★ गणपती किंवा गणेश म्हणजे गणाचा स्वामी. गण म्हणजे समुदाय अथवा जमात. ब्रह्मणस्पती या देवाला ऋग्वेदात ‘गणपति’ हे विशेषण वरील अर्थी योजले आहे. ब्रह्मणस्पती हा स्वतंत्र देव इंद्रादिकांसारखा ऋग्वेदात वर्णिला आहे. वेदांच्या संहिता व ब्राह्मणग्रंथ यांमध्ये गणपती ही स्वतंत्र देवता म्हणून कोठेही निर्देशिलेली नाही. गणपतीच्या मूर्तीचे वर्णन, ‘तत्पुरुष’, ‘वक्रतुंड’ व ‘दंति’ या विशेषणांनी मैत्रायणी संहितेत आणि तैत्तिरीय आरण्यकातील ‘नारायणोपनिषद’ नामक अखेरच्या विभागात आले आहे. मूर्तिपूजकांच्या गरूड, दुर्गा, स्कंद इ. देवतांचाही त्याच संदर्भात निर्देश व वर्णन आले आहे. नारायणोपनिषद, आरण्यकाचा भाग असल्यामुळे त्याचा काल इ.स.पू.सहाव्या-पाचव्या शतकांपर्यंत पोहोचतो. परंतु हे मूर्तिपूजकांच्या देवतांचे निर्देश त्यात मागाहून आले आहेत, असे वा.वी.मिराशी यांचे मत आहे. गणपत्यथर्वशीर्ष ह्या उपनिषदात गणपती देवाच्या मूर्तीचे वर्णन आले आहे परंतु हेही उपनिषद ईशादी प्राचीन उपनिषदांत इतिहासज्ञ अंतर्भूत करीत नाहीत. हे उपनिषद गुप्तकाळाच्या सुमाराचे असावे अशी उत्तरकालीन उपनिषदे शेकडो आहेत त्यांतच हेही गणले जाते.
लिंग, अग्नि, शिव, भविष्य इ. पुराणांमध्ये गजाननाच्या अवताराची कथा निरनिराळ्या प्रकारे आलेली आहे. गणेशपुराण नावाचे उपपुराणही आहे परंतु पुराणांमध्ये प्राचीन व अर्वाचीन असे पुष्कळ भाग मिसळले आहेत. पुराणांमध्ये भर पडत गेली व काही प्राचीन भागही त्यांतून गळत गेले आहेत
 Ganapati or Ganesha is the lord of Gana. Gana means community or tribe. In the Rig Veda, the adjective 'Ganapati' is used to refer to the god Brahmanspati. Brahmanaspati is described in the Rig Veda as an independent god like Indradika. Ganapati is not mentioned as an independent deity anywhere in Vedic scriptures and Brahmanical texts. The description of the idol of Lord Ganesha is given by the adjectives 'Tatpurush', 'Vakratund' and 'Danti' in the Maitrayani Samhita and in the last section called 'Narayanopanishad' in Taittiriya Aranyaka. Idolaters like Garuda, Durga, Skanda etc. The deities are also instructed and described in the same context. The Narayanopanishad, being a part of Aranyaka, dates back to the 6th-5th centuries BC. But these instructions of the pagan deities have come from behind, says VV Mirashi. The Upanishad Ganapatyatharvashirsha describes the idol of Lord Ganapati, but even this Upanishad is not included in the ancient Upanishads by historians. This Upanishad is considered to be one of the hundreds of later Upanishads dating back to the Gupta period.
Ling, Agni, Shiva, Bhavishya etc. The story of Gajanan's incarnation is told in various ways in the Puranas. There is also a sub-purana called Ganeshpuran but the puranas are mixed with many ancient and modern parts. Puranas have been added and some ancient parts have also fallen out of them
