β β β β β Gaya is not only the prominent Buddhist pilgrimage center but also a city of great mythological significance. It carries a rich legacy of diverse religions and dynasties that are clearly evident in the form of several magnificent temples and monuments, which attract a lot of people of all ages from various corners of the world. It is a city with many museums that showcase the rich cultural heritage and glorious past. The museums in Gaya have played a key role in preserving the national legacy through the wonderful collection of precious ancient artifacts, paintings, relics, engravings and various other items. One of the best ways to understand what makes Gaya special among the people is to plan a visit to its museums during your tour to Bihar.Bodhgaya Archaeological Museum, situated close to the famous Mahabodhi Temple, was set up in the year 1956. The museum houses some excellent and rare antique collections including terracotta items, sculptures from the 1st century and idols of Hindu gods made of silver, bronze and gold, among others. In a gallery inside, visitors can see all the Dasavatara or incarnations of Lord Vishnu. There are enormous idols of Lord Buddha in abhayamudra position and varaha avatar displayed in the museum. Also on display here are objects belonging to the Mauryan and Gupta periods and coins from the Mughal era. Apart from some curious travellers, the place is frequented by historians and archaeologists in large numbers.

β β β β β There are some good as well as bad aspects of this museum. Starting from good one ,it has some well organised and well preserved pieces of antiquity in its inventory and there is no entry fee also. There are beautiful plants in the garden outside the museum. The bad aspect is that some big statues and torans are lying idle on the ground . These could have been well displayed. Also the display theme is very much boring and doesn't attracts the eyes of the viewers .Also many galleries were closed during my visit. They should have been also displayed so that the visitors might get a complete feel of the museum. The building also looks somewhat damped from outside. It should have been beautifully painted. There is huge scope for further development and improvement, but all in all it was a good experience and what more one could expect without an entry fee.
A must visit place and thumbs up to it

β β β β β This is a small museum. Artifacts have been displayed in 4-5 rooms and being enlarged with new a new hall of Pindaan based theme and a very large auditorium. Best thing of this museum is that one can touch and have feel of stone carved statues.

β β β β β It is a very good, well maintained, clean place with different sculptures and relics as old as 10th century AD, earthen pots of Gupta era and has important manuscripts and paintings. Very few people visits here and it is not at all popular. Some more details and information about the sculptures is needed to create interest among visitors.
