ઇ.સ 1836માં સુરતમાં નિર્મળદાસજી નામના સંત દ્વારા કોટસફીલ રોડ પર આવેલા શેષનારાયણ મંદિરમાં એક મઠની સ્થાપના કરવામાં આવી હતી. જ્યાં દેવશંકરભાઇ શુકલ નામના વ્યક્તિ દ્વારા તેમને મળેલા અનાજમાંથી સંત નિર્મળદાસજીના મઠમાં રસોઇ કરી જમાડતા હતા. સંત નિર્મળદાસજીએ દેવશંકરભાઇને વિશિષ્ટ પ્રકારની મીઠાઇ બનાવવાની રીત શીખવાડી હતી. આ મિઠાઇને ઘારી નામ આપ્યુ હતું. ત્યાર બાદ દેવશંકરભાઇએ ગુરુ દ્વારા શીખવવામાં આવેલા મીઠાઈની પદ્ધતિ બાદ ઇ.સ. 1838માં લાલગેટ ખાતે સૌ પ્રથમ ઘારી અને ફરસાણની દુકાન શરૂ કરી હતી. તે સમયે આઝાદીની ચળવળ ચાલી રહી હતી. ઈ.સ.1857ના અંગ્રેજો સામે મોરચો ખોલનાર વીપ્લવ અને તાત્યા ટોપે અને તેમના સૈન્યે પણ ઘારી ખાધી હતી અને તે દિવસ આસો વદ પડવો હતો અને ત્યારથી જ ચંદની પડવાના દિવસે ઘારી ખાવાની પ્રથા શરુ થઇ હતી.
 History of Ghari
In 1836, a monastery was established in Surat by a saint named Nirmaldasji at the Seshanarayana Temple on Kotsafil Road. Where Devashankarabhai used to cook and cook in the monastery of Saint Nirmaldasji from the cereal he received by a person called Shukal. Saint Nirmaldasji taught Devashankarabhai how to make a special kind of dessert. This dessert was named Ghari. Then Devshankarabhai followed the method of dessert taught by Guru. In 1838 the first grocery and paving shop was opened at Lalgate. At that time the freedom movement was going on. Viplav and Tatya Tope and their troops, who had opened the front against the British in 1857, had lost their strength, and that day had to subside, and since then the practice of eating Ghari had begun on the fall of the moon.
