Being born and brought up in Kolkata and having spent almost my entire childhood in the City of Joy, Victoria Memorial and the great street food jamboree right in front of it was unforgettable. Much of that huge expanse of street food had disappeared but I still carried the taste of Dal Vada with me. And here I was, in front of the great Vardaan market – to savour the street food – shopping being mere alibi.
Vardaan was among the first AC markets when the mall culture was not well established. So, we could find small shops – mostly non-branded stuff selling clothes and other knick-knacks. The market with its heavy bargaining did not make me comfortable. Nonetheless, I spent more time outside eating delicacies including Dal Vada (which boasts of some UK premier having visited his shop), puchkas and the likes.
Go there for some interesting street food and some bargain hunting when you are not sure what you want to buy.
