A Gurdwara/Sikh Mandir (Gurdwara; meaning "Guru's Gate") is a gathering and place of worship for Sikhs. Sikh Gurdwaras are also called Gurdwara Sahib. People of all religions are welcomed in Gurudwaras. Each gurdwara has a Darbar Sahib where the present and all-time Guru of the Sikhs, the Granth Guru Granth Sahib, is placed on a takht (an elevated throne) in a prominent central position. In the presence of the congregation, ragis (those who sing melody) sing, and interpret verses from the Guru Granth Sahib.
All Gurdwaras have a Langar Hall, where people can consume free vegetarian food served by volunteers at the Gurudwara. They may have a medical facility room, library, nursery, classroom, living room, playground, sports field, a gift shop and finally a repair shop. A gurdwara can be identified by the distant flag bearing the Sikh flag, the Nishan Sahib.
The most famous gurdwaras are in Amritsar, the Darbar Sahib in Punjab, including the spiritual center of the Sikhs and the Akal Takht, the political center of the Sikhs.
