PLEASE READ THE FULL REVIEW to have a clear idea of the present condition of Hartley. Don’t go by other reviews as they are either written by ex-Hartleyans who have passed out a long time ago or some emotional people who love their school above everything and happily overlook the grievous condition of the school. I have been studying in the school for more than ten years and I have seen the drastic transformation of the school in front of my eyes. When we were in the primary section, Hartley was undoubtedly a very good and reputed English medium school affordable for everyone. BUT…the present Hartley is just a shadow of the past. The infrastructure has developed a lot(who cares about frequent water logging during monsoon?) but the standard of education has fallen drastically. At present the quality of education is ‘substandard’. Most of the good teachers have either retired or left the school. At present the school is full of young and inexperienced teachers who do not even know their subject properly. We had a math teacher (for a short time) who taught class 11-12 but could not differentiate x^x. We have another math teacher who is ‘afraid’ to do sums out of SN De book, yet full of ego. Then we have a chemistry teacher who gets nervous while teaching and make mistakes even looking at the book continuously (while copying the things on the board). Once she could not tell the name of a simple coordination compound and called it a ‘hydroxide kind of thing’!! Then we have another teacher who delivers us (sic) by coming to the class for last 10-15 minutes and spending that time too by gossiping or scolding somebody. I don’t even want to say anything about our honorable physics teacher ‘KK sir’. The school has HS section but none of the teachers (in the science stream, except biology department) are even competent to teach as per WBCHSE standard. In one word, if an average student does not have good home tutors and depends fully on the school teachers, then he will surely fail. The primary section has also deteriorated a lot.(one of my cousins study in class 3) Now coming to the management I would like to say that it is very poor. Indiscipline has entered the roots. Co-curricular activities must be encouraged but not to such a level that it questions the real purpose of coming to school i.e. studies. To be honest there is no environment for proper studying in the school. Our principal only wants to show off by organizing functions, sports, selling school bags with school logo and boasting about academic achievements of students behind which the school doesn’t have any credit. Last year we were forced to buy two pairs each of poor quality synthetic socks (which one can get from footpath or local trains for Rs 20-30 a pair) for Rs 110. This shows how ardent they are to suck the hard earned money from the parents. There are many other ‘things’ which I could not highlight in my already long review. In a nutshell, I would request all parents that if you want your child to succeed in life, and not ‘destroy his future’ don’t even think of admission in this school.

Mohua Chaterji don't behave like a 'bhakt'. Facts cannot be overridden by pointless emotions. If you are choosing to continue your daughter's education in this substandard school, you are free to do so. But you have no right to misguide other parents. What you are spreading is not postivity, its 'false information'. Other parents, if you are thinking of admitting your child in this school, well, reconsider your decision. And if your child is already studying in morning, try to change the school in day session. Would you like your child to be taught science in class 6 by the PT teacher? Hartley is a trash school

I have been a student of this school. 13 best years of my life have been in this particular premises. This was more of a home for me and the teachers were our guardian and supported us in every every possible way.

This school (Garcha Branch specially) has various positive aspects to make itself one of the most sought after schools in Kolkata but what lacks is they overlook what a parent expects. They have some of the finest teachers who with all the good intentions want to help each and every child to succeed. But they lack promotion of the school brand. Being one of the oldest institutions...very few people knows about it. They lack a proper screening system in selecting a student in terms of the culture of guardians. A student's financial background in not important but the family background and culture really matters for a healthy environment within the classroom. Every Guardian would want their children to get admission to a school where the student would one day be proud of after Schooling. The school has most of the parameters to become one of the renowned school...only thing lacks is execution and orientation. But I would like to mention, inspire of all ups and downs...the students love going to school. All the best.

The school was good. Although the seniors were very rude to juniors. And we have some vote for Headboy and head girl. Everyone blackmails everyone during the time. And the attitude of the headboy and the head girl after being nominated is otherworldly. But the teachers are good (some)

Very good school for children. Only thing is that there is no big play ground here.
