IAF was established in 1932 during British rule in India.
IAF has engaged in wars with Pakistan (4 times) & China once.
IAF’s fighter jets are from Russia, France & Britain under a license agreement to manufacture by HAL.
IAF fleet consists of Russian aircrafts like MiG-21, MiG-29, Su-30
Sukhoi Su-30MKI is the most advanced fighter jet built in India by HAL under license agreement with Russia’s Sukhoi & was inducted in 2002.
Russian MiG 21 is the first supersonic jet aircraft which played a pivotal role in the 1971 Indo Pak War.
Having served for 60 years, MiG 21 is still in service with limited role as fighter jets.
IAF has plans to replace it with the Tejas LCA.
MiG 29 was introduced in 1970s to counter U.S planes like F-15 & F-16.
MiG 29 forms the 2nd line of defence after the Sukhoi Su-30MKI.
Mirage-2000 is the deadliest aircraft, commissioned in 1985, developed by Dassault Aviation, the French company who also manufactures the Rafale Combat Aircrafts.
Rafael has already been ordered by the IAF.
Recently Mirage-2000 fighter jets crossed over the Indo Pak border & dropped 1000 kg laser-guided bombs to destroy JeM terror launch pads across the LoC in Balakot.
Mirage-2000 are the same jets that helped India win the 1999 Kargil war.
Jaguar is a fighter jet developed by British Royal Air Force & French Air Force.
Tejas is the indigenously built fighter aircraft, of HAL, to be inducted in the IAF
IAF has over 60 air bases spread over India & a base in Farkhor, Tajikistan, the only base outside India.
At 22000 ft, Siachen Glacier AFS is the highest Air Force Station of the IAF.
