This was the place where it all started, the festival to unite all of us for our fight for the freedom. Apart from the temple, the place also has a museum which has few belongings of the Lokmanya Tilak as well. Kesari Wada is at walking distance from Shreemant Dagduseth Halwai Temple and is a must visit

Kesari Wada Ganpati — केसरीवाडा गणपती (मानाचा पाचवा गणपती) Kesari Wada Ganpati is the 5th most honorable Ganpati in Pune which was installed by freedom fighter Lokmanya Tilak himself in 1893 at his own house Kesari Wada thereby named as Kesari Wada Ganpati. He made it an official public festival by forming Ganesh Mandal known as Kesari Wada Ganapati Mandal in 1894. The Ganpati festival in Pune is eye-pleasing and celebrated with great pomp. Every year people eagerly wait to welcome their beloved Bappa and look forward to relish Bappa’s favourite food ‘Modaks’.

Kesariwada Ganapati is the 5th respected Ganapati in Pune. Since its inception in 1894, the Kesari Trust’s Ganesh festival used to be organised at Vinchurkar Wada, off Kumthekar Road, which was then the ancestral home of the Tilaks. Then in 1905, it was shifted to Gaikwad Wada, presently known as Kesariwada. Mr. Dipak Tilak, who is the president of Kesari Trust says, “We spend little on decorations and focus more on organizing various events like lectures, competitions that bring people together” which is probably the main reason why the festival was started by Bal Tilak.

Kesari Wada previously known as Gaikwad Wada, located at Narayan Peth in Pune at a distance of 2kms from the city centre is a historical monument. Built by Gaikwad Sarkar, the wada was the residence of Sayajirao Gaikwad, the prince of Baroda. In 1905 Bal Gangadhar Tilak bought it from Sayajirao Gaikwada and started his famous Kesari and Marati newspaper. Lokmanya Balgangadhar Tilak, the great freedom fighter and social reformer stayed here for a long time (1905 to till his death 1920). The monument houses a small museum inaugurated by Shrimati Soniya Gandhi, the then Congress President of India on 22nd of January 1999 and a Library founded by Lokmanya Tilak on the 1st of August 1912 for his newspapers Kesari and Maratha. The museum on the ground floor consists of the first Indian National flag unfurl by Madam Cama, offices of Kesari and Maratha newspapers, mementos of Tilak such as his clothes, books, watch ,his writing desk, genealogical table ,replica of Tilak’s study room and cell in Mandalay Jail, orginal letters and many documents. Library on the second floor houses more than 50,000 books including the books written by Professor Jinsiwale, Lokhitwadi and other up to date intellectuals. The first and second floors of the monument is now used as the branch offices of the Bank of Maharashtra and the third floor houses the Kesari-maratha Trust Office.

Kesari Wada Ganpati is the 5th Ganpati of Mana in Pune. This Ganeshotsav of Lokmanya Tilak's organization 'Kesari' started from 1894. At that time Lokmanya Tilak was living in Vinchurkar Wada. Ganeshotsav started taking place in Tilakwada from 1905. The history of Lokmanya Tilak and Ganeshotsav is well known. The immersion procession of this Ganapati starts from the palanquin. The procession for the immersion of the first four Ganapatis of Mana passes through Lakshmi Road. However, Ganpati of Kesari Wadya is immersed on Kelkar Road.

The Kesari Wada was previously known as Gaikwad Wada. Located in Narayan Peth, this wada built by Gaikwad Sarkar is also the birthplace of Pune’s first newspaper- Kesari. Despite several changes over time, the printing press in the wada still stands and is open for public viewing. The modern day Kesari Wada also acts as a museum where Lokmanya Tilak’s belongings are displayed along with one of the initial flags of our country. Lokmanya Tilak’s books, clothing, his watch, and a replica of the Mandalay jail where he was locked in are some of the popular attractions of this museum. The Tilak museum is an important stop in the Pune Darshan Tour and is highly regarded by Maharashtrians everywhere. The wada also houses a library which has been personally compiled by Lokmanya Tilak. With the years, comes change. The wada has been renovated, but its huge wooden trademark entrance is still there. The doors are carved with the roaring figures of the word ‘Kesari’ which is a Sanskrit translation for lion. The famous hall – Lokmanya Sabhagruha, is still used for hosting several social and cultural programs. The Kesari Wada is proof that a building, or even a stone structure, can be the birthplace of the most enormous change. We, as Punekars, owe our freedom and our cultural identity to Lokmanya Tilak and Kesari Wada. Lest we forget, this wada is one of the main reasons why people still refer to Pune as the cultural capital of Maharashtra! for historical experience you also be visit here.

This Ganeshotsav was our first after we came to Pune. And so, it was a no-brainer for us to do a darshan of the 5 "Manache Ganpati". Of the 5 Manache Ganpati, 4 are in close localities, the fifth one "Kesariwada Ganpati" is a bit far, nearly 1-1.5 km from the 4th Manacha Ganpati (Tulsibaug Ganpati). Kesariwada Ganpati obviously has a historical significance in the context of Indian Independence journey. So this place is steeped in both culture and history. The decor & Ganpati idol are simple esp when compared with the rest of Manache Ganpati. The place is very spacious and can easily accomodate a large gathering. If you are on a cultural or historial tour of Pune, this is one place you cannot miss.
