Khargeswar Temple is one of the oldest temples built in Kharagpur and the name of the place originates from this temple. Khargeswar was established 400 years back by King Kharag Singh. As it is mentioned in Mahabharata, this place was ruled by the Demon King Hiramba. It is a place of mythological significance as Pancha Pandavas spent a few years of their exile here. Bheem deeply loved Hirimba (sister of Hiramba) this made Hiramba angry and because of which he had clashed with Bheem and he was killed by Bheem at the same place where Khargeswar Temple is located. The ideal worship is of lord Shiva. It is very close to the Kharagpur railway station it makes it easy for people to be here. Enjoy the architecture and the experience of being in the here.

Kharagpur town derives it's name from lord khargeswar. An ancient temple believed to be linked with Mahabharat and the pandavas. Charak Festival is a must see here. On shiv ratri devotees floc to this temple. On any ordinary day a strange peace pervades here. The hude peepul tree embraces the temple from the front. Mahaprabhu on his way to puri had rested here under the age old neem tree. The lord pulls you to this shrine. It's a must visit if you go to Kharagpur. Many Miracles happen in this temple. This sacred Hindu temple of Lord Shiv is at Inda, Kharagpur and nearly 2 km from Kharagpur Railway Station of Howrah - Kharagpur rail route. This east facing laterite built temple is sapta-ratha shikhara style with attached low pyramidal Pirha style Jogmohan . The roof of main temple is smooth curvilinear . The roof of the main temple was renovated unscientifically but the originality of Jogmohan is maintained more or less. This temple was built probably in seventeenth century. In the public opinion the name of Kharagpur town of West Medenipore was derived from Lord Khargeswar ( Lord Shiv). Religious people come here everyday for offering puja and darshana. Huge number of devotees come in Bangla Charak sankranti, Shiv- rattri and every Monday in Bangla Sraban month
