★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Lalbazar is a neighbourhood in central Kolkata, earlier known as Calcutta, in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is part of the central business district adjoining B.B.D. Bagh area. The headquarters of the Kolkata Police is located here (18, Lalbazar Street) and is popularly known by the same name.
The road leading from the north-east corner of B. B. D. Bag to Bowbazar was earlier known as ‘Avenue to the eastward’. It was also known as the Great Bungalo Road. The modern police office was the residence of John Palmer, one of the merchant princes of Kolkata. Earlier to that it was said to be ‘an old ruin of a house, formerly the residence of some native.’ The house next to it was the Harmonic Tavern, the handsomest house in its day and pulled down long back.

Punishment in old Kolkata was often by hanging. There was a gibbet at the crossing of Lalabazar and Chitpore Road (now Rabindra Sarani).

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I lost my brand new mobile on 6th October 2019 near Alipore railway station. Although I had no hope of recovery inspite of that I lodged a GD in my nearest Survey park and left for Mumbai where presently I am working. After nearly six months I got a call from Lalbazar HQ informing that Police has searched out my mobile phone. The police officer requested me to visit the HQ with documentery evidence alongwith the copy of the GD to collect the same. Due to Covid situation I couldn't come to Kolkata. I was sure that due to delay I will not get my mobile. On Durga Puja vacation I have come to Kolkata and one day I have dialled Lal Bazar HQ and enquired about my mobile. The concerned police officer was very polite and requested me to visit the HQ. Finally on 5th November I have visited HQ and submitted the required documents. After waiting for half an hour to my utter surprise the officer handed over my lost mobile in intact condition. This is really a splendid Job done by Kolkata Police. I salute Kolkata police of their commendable job.
