Kurumbera fort is situated near kharagpur in a remote village named Gangeswar. Actually it is not a fort rather it is a ruins of temple turned mosque. This premise was built by an odissi King which was afterward destroyed by Mughal emperor Aurangzeb and rebuilt as mosque. Place is quite good for a day trip from kolkata. There is no other shops for foods and others amusement but here is an awesome mini food stall of 'shankar kaka' who sales 'Bengali Ghugni', 'Boiled eggs', 'Papad bhaja'. Taste of foods are too good and his behaviour is very nice. Any one can try snacks from him.

This fort was situated around 1437AD by Utkal king Gajapati Kapilendra Dev. It is not a perfect fort like architecture as because it didn't hosted perfect war management system. However it's architecture depicts ancient utkal heritage. Utkal is now known as Odissa. Actually it is apprehended that the place was built for closed wall arena for open air artistic performance and puja of Hindu goddess. Later around 1752, during Mughal rule, under the Samrat Aurangajeb it was transformed to a mosk. Recently the heritage place is under the surveillance of ASI.

A decent place for a quick mini trip from kharagpur. It closes by 5pm, backside has enough parking space. Please avoid visiting in afternoon in summer as it is a open area and would be very hot

The Sun Dynasty of Orissa was built during the reign of King Gajapati Kapilendra Dev in 1438-1469 (inscribed in Oriya inscriptions), and also contains structures built by Mohammad Tahir (stone inscription) during the reign of Aurangzeb. Despite being a protected monument under ASI, no information is available about this fort. In 1568, the Afghan Sultanate of Bengal and Bihar invaded Orissa, which included the undivided Midnapore district of West Bengal. Later, Odisha was captured by the Mughals in 1575 after defeating the Afghans of Bengal at the Battle of Tukroi. They divided the Odisha subah into five governments and this part became part of the Jalesar government. Although religiously inspired invasions by Mughal generals in Orissa occurred from time to time, they became more frequent during the reign of Aurangzeb. Aurangzeb's forces looted many temples in Orissa, including Medinipur. Aurangzeb also issued a fatwa to demolish the Jagannath temple. During the reign of Aurangzeb, the Kurumbera fort and temple complex were attacked and converted into a mosque.

A treasure under coal mine. Beautiful place for spending a day. There is small shops by local people, also a free public toilet. Some structure collapsed, some are restored, Archeological dept should maintain. Best place for photography ?
