Supermarkets and fast food outlets are popping up everywhere but for most Indians home cooked meals remain the very essence of life. All over India, the weekly vegetable market, stuffed with farm fresh produce, is what makes it possible. The music of chanting vendors and barking dogs, the vibrant shapes and colours of fruits and vegetables, the comedy of friendly bargaining between buyer and vendor; the art of everyday life is here, free flowing and heart warming. This is India, in a shopping basket.India is a country of farmers. It contributes to over 14% of our GDP. Sadly though, farmer suicides account for over 11.2% of all suicides in India. The Indian farmer is tormented by the lack of monsoon, burden of debt, genetically modified crops and government policies. The least we can do is source local, and save the farmer. It is with this intent that I've made my film on a classic Indian vegetable market. The stuff here is sourced locally and most of the sellers are farmers themselves. In an age of malls and organised retail, these markets are fading quickly and my attempt is to raise awareness about them. As long as these markets survive, our farmers have a chance of selling directly to the consumer. It's a win-win for both parties. The consumers get fresh produce and the farmers can continue doing what they do best
