Maninagesvar Siva Temple, Bardhanpur, Dist - Balasore The temple is located at a distance of 20 kms south- east of Balasore and 4 kms north of Bhimpur. The temple presently lies between the village Jayadeva and Bikrampur. It is very renowned and as told by the priest, even older than Jagannath Temple, Puri. It is a living temple that enshrines a Sivalinga within a circular Yonipitha. It was built during the Ganga rule in the first quarter of the15th century A.D. The temple is devoid of sculptural embellishment except the udyotasimha in the rahapagas. Interior is Plain, but the jagamohana has two niches housing the image of 18 armed Durga (Ashtabhuja Durga) and four armed Visnu. Images of Bhairava Sivalinga, broken Chamunda image etc. are there. The temple is pancharatha on plan and panchangabada in elevation. Structure is Rekha vimana, a pidha antarala and jagamohana of Kalingan order. Ashlar masonry building technique has been used. The temple is made of laterite, whereas the icons and doorjambs are made of chlorite stone. Few Rain water seepages from the ceiling of the antarala are observed. Every year on the occasion of Sivaratri, white wash has been given to the temple. The temple is facing towards the west. The vimana is square on plan, whereas the jagamohana is rectangular that stands over a low pidha. The temple has a rekha vimana and pidha jagamohana of impoverished Kalingan order. It houses large number of Saivite sculptures, and iconographically they can be assigned to the 14th – 15th centuries AD. Festivals like Sivaratri, Kartika Purnima, Chandna yatra, Durgapuja etc. are celebrated here. Public ceremonies like Thread ceremony, birth ceremony etc. are also held.
