बृहन्मुंबई महानगारापलिकेची स्थापना 1882 मध्ये भारतातील पहिली महानगरपालिका म्हणून झाली. तिच्या स्थापनेपासून, बहुसंख्य अराजकीय गट, स्वयंसेवी संस्था आणि नागरिक संघटना तिच्या बरोबर शिक्षण, सार्वजनिक आरोग्य, नागरी सोयीसुविधा, कला आणि संस्कृती, पुरातन वास्तु जतन,इ. क्षेत्रामध्ये फार लक्षपूर्वक काम करित आहे. बृहन्मुंबई महानगरपालिकेच्या संस्था ह्या बृहन्मुंबई महानगरपालिकेच्या कुटुंबाचा एक घटक असून मुंबईच्या नागरिकांकरिता कार्यक्षम आणि उत्कृष्ट सेवा देण्याचे ध्येय गाठण्यासाठी एकत्रित काम करीत आहेत. बृहन्मुंबई महानगरपालिका ही आशिया खंडातील सर्वात मोठी स्थानिक स्वराज्य संस्था आहे
मुंबई ही आपल्या कीर्तीवर उभी आहे. हे शहर या शहरातील रहिवाशांनी वसवलेले आहे. मुंबई ही काँक्रीटची बनली असली तरी ती सर्वासाठी आहे
मुंबई हे बेट पोर्तुगीजांनी इग्लंडचे राजे चार्ल्स-दुसरा यांनी कॅथरिनसोबत विवाह केला तेव्हा त्यांना विवाहाचा हुंडा म्हणून देण्यात आले होते. हास सात बेटांचा गट ईस्ट इंडिया कंपनीस भाडयाने देण्यात आला होता. त्या कंपनीने ज्या व्यक्ती तेथे आल्या आणि स्थिरस्थावर झाल्या अशांना व्यवसाय आणि धर्माचे स्वातंत्र्य दिले. प्रारंभी काही पारशी आणि गुजराती आले परंतु लवकरच मोठया संख्येने येथे येवू लागले.
हे 17 व्या शतकाच्या मागील काळात होते. आजही मुंबई ही स्थलांतरित लोकांचे शहर आहे. संपूर्ण देशातील लोक येथे स्थिरस्थावर होण्यासाठी येत असतात. ह्यामुळे मुंबईच्या समाजामध्ये बहुभाषिक आणि बहुसांस्कृतिक रंग भरले गेले आहेत.
18 व्या शतकामध्ये मुंबईचा विकास होत गेला आणि हे शहर स्वातंत्र्य चळवळीतील सैनिकांचे एक प्रमुख केंद्रही झाले. ब्रिटीशांनी आपली राजेशाही सुरत पासून मुंबई पर्यंत ज्याचे पूर्वीचे नाव बाँम्बे होते, या ठिकाणी स्थलांतरित केली. पहिली रेल्वे रुळ बाँम्बे ते ठाणे असा टाकण्यात आला होता.
स्वातंत्र्य लढयाला आकार देण्यात बॉबेने महत्वाची भूमिका पार पाडली होती. पहिल्या भारतीय राष्ट्रीय काँग्रेसची पहिली सभा येथे झाली आणि गांधीजींनी ‘भारत छोडो’ हा नारादेखील याच ठिकाणी दिला.आज मुंबई महाराष्ट्राची राजधानी आहे. सन 1996 मध्ये बाँम्बेचे पुनर्नामकरण मुंबई असे झाले
हे शहर कधीच झोपत नाही, त्याचे रस्ते कधीच रिकामी नसतात. वाढती मागणी भागविणयासाठी कारखाने आणि गिरण्या दिवस-रात्र सुरु असतात त्यांच्या प्रयत्नामुळेच मुंबई भारताची आर्थिक राजधानी बनली आहे.
सुंदर नैसर्गिक बंदर मुंबई ही जगभरात विस्तारलेल्या व्यवसाय हाताळते. अरबी समुद्राच्या किना-यावर वसलेले या शहरात काही तरी आहे किंवा सर्वांना काहीती देते परंतु मुंबईत कोणी हे मिळवितो आणि कोणीतरी जीवनाच्या शर्यतीमध्ये मागे राहतो.
