It was established on 10th February, 1949 under the Poona University Act. The university houses 46 academic departments. It is popularly known as the 'Oxford of the East'. It has about 307 recognized research institutes and 612 affiliated colleges offering graduate and under-graduate courses.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Deeply disappointing interview experience. I returned to India after several years overseas and held this institute in high regard for its research calibre. Upon reaching the interview site, there were general murmurs and it became evident that one of the applicants was currently working with the lead scientist (Padma Shastry) and had already been selected for the post; although this was of course not explicitly stated and interviews with all the candidates were held. I was told at the interview that I was over-qualified, with no explanation then for why I was invited for the interview in the first place. Sometime after the interview, I received a call from Dr. P. Shastry who was on the interview panel. I was complimented richly on my expertise and performance at the interview and was asked to come back for other positions. This was followed by another trip to Pune and meetings with the director and other scientists. Other positions were discussed and I expressed interest in one position. In spite of following-up, I never heard back from them. It's a pity that a reputed institute with international standing works in such a haphazard unprofessional fashion, unmindful of candidates' interests or time.
