About National Foundation for India

Prof. Jayati Ghosh is one of the world’s leading development economists and has been teaching economics in Centre for Economic Studies and Planning, School of Social Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) since 1986. She has been recently appointed as Professor in the Department of Economics and to the Political Economy Research Institute (PERI), at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

She has authored and/or edited 18 books and nearly 200 scholarly articles, most recently Demonetisation Decoded: A critique of India’s monetary experiment (with CP Chandrasekhar and Prabhat Patnaik, Routledge 2017), the Elgar Handbook of Alternative Theories of Economic Development (Co-edited with Erik Reinert and Rainer Kattel, Edward Elgar 2016) and Indian and the International Economy, (Oxford Universities Press 2015).

Her research output has been recognised through several national and international prizes, including the M. Adisheshaiah Award for distinguished contributions to the social sciences in India in 2015; the International Labour Organisation’s Decent Work Research Prize for 2010; the NordSud Prize for Social Sciences 2010 of the Fondazione Pescarabruzzo, Italy; and the Ava Maiti Award and the Satyendranath Sen Prize from the Asiatic Society, Kolkata; and the UNDP Award for Excellent in Analysis (for the West Bengal Human Development Report 2004). She has advised governments in India and other countries at different levels and consulted for many international organisations. She was the Chairperson of the Andhra Pradesh Commission on Farmers’ Welfare in 2004, and Member of the National Knowledge Commission reporting to the Prime Minister of India (2005-09)

Since 2002, Jayati has been serving as Executive Secretary of International Development Economics Associates (IDEAS). She is the founding Trustee of the Economic Research Foundation, a charitable trust devoted to progressive economic research, and a member of the Independent Commission for the Reform of International Corporate Taxation and the Commission on Global Economic Transformation of the Institute for New Economic Thinking. Jayati has a BA from Delhi University, M.A. from JNU, and MPhil and PhD from the University of Cambridge.
