I am a graduate from NIST (2013) and now (2021) a postgraduate from IITH. I have had a decent set of experiences from Corporate, Govt and Top Academic Institutions. I feel there’s a need to explain things to our people about the expectations they can have from an institution like NIST and that’s what the review intends to. Academically, I had a below average experience because of the NIST culture from the time of 2010-2013. I probably would have had made better progress and learning, even if I had pursued a Distance Learning program. Much of it also had to do with the university protocols as well. Please do note that my views are not very general. So you are free to disagree to it. A brief summary of my review: NIST has fairly good infrastructure (the best in South Odisha), but inherently it is just another average institution in learning experiences, which is what more than 90% institutions are like. Prospective students should probably choose less rated Government Institutions over NIST, should not get carried away by the ratings, looks and hype. They would save a lot of money, which can be spent for learning from better resources, take up courses on Coursera/edX, go for internships to IIT/NITs. Well, if you have to choose from the top private colleges in Odisha, then NIST is equally good/bad. Here are some things, I would like to emphasize on: What's special about NIST! One special quality NIST has different from other institutions is how examination and evaluations are conducted, they are fair. No copying, no malpractices of any kind. When is it OK to join NIST!!! 1. If you have a lot of mental strength. Why strength, because you may be harassed just by a sweeper in the campus, even if you leave out the professors and management. This must change. 2. If you love to be in a beautiful and green campus and surroundings. You love exploring places around. There are good number of places that you can visit during the few years of stay, that you would always cherish for the rest of the life. 3. If you are location bound. 4. If you are okay mugging up things and following strict (even if unwanted) academic discipline. Why NIST may not be a wise choice! (where NIST can be much better) 1. During 2010-2013, I felt, we had almost zero academic freedom. (e.g. Unnecessarily long internal exams, which focused more on mugging up things and less of analytical and problem-solving abilities.) The evaluation system needs change, the instructors need to learn respecting the time of students. Instead of becoming a taskmaster, become a friend and make people learn, moreover they themselves should learn. 2. Teaching culture is poor. For example, the 100 minute long lectures, probably don’t make you learn any better, they make you sleep or get frustrated. The duration isn’t a problem, but the imposed duration with below average teaching staff is a big problem. A better practice maybe when, a faculty gives a break of 5 minutes in the middle of the lecture in the form of a quiz, or some off-topic interaction. Note: In recent times, I see an upward trend in profile of new faculty members. 3. During 2010-2013, we saw the hostel facilities were just about average. 4. There are good number of faculty members, who behave in a very uncivilised manner. A young mind should be nurtured and cared, not bullied. A faculty must be into learning new things, while sharing his/her experiences. 5. The system is quite harsh on creative minds, no encouragement for trying out new ways of solving problems and fundamental engineering (be it in programming labs, or even in classroom discussions). Students should be able to solve same assignments in many ways. The evaluation system needs to enhance itself to understand the efforts and understanding of the students. Note: (recent updates) 1. The institution has received autonomous status. 2. The management seems to have undergone some drastic changes. 3. The promotion and encouragement for higher studies is such a huge relief. Hoping for a better future! Thank for reading!

It is one excellent institute for computer science students. Famous companies like Infosys, TCS, Mahindra Tech,Wipro etc come here to take students as there employees. The teaching is of very very high standard. Now a days, they are teaching other trades also.

one of the best engineering college in the odisha, best campus recruitments, tough competition for the entry into this college, it was good experience in my life to be in this college, good faulty and good college, location wise this college is far away from the main berhampur city, which make little odd, hard to get any commercial place near to it. loads of activities. do join the college and enjoy your study.

NIST is the best College in Odisha in terms of placement and campus life. It provides us very peaceful environment to persue our studies. One of the best thing about this College is its faculties. All the faculties members are very supportive and they make us learn all the topics very easily. One of the main reason to choose this College beside others is its fees which is comparatively low.The College also provides us good internship opportunities.
