This temple is dedicated to lord shiva. As per the legends, Lord Rama installed the linga here to get rid of the Dosha in killing Ravana who is a Brahmin. On his way back to Ayodhya, Rama ordered Anjaneya to bring Siva Linga from Kailash as time is lapsing. Rama along with Sita and Lakshmana made two Siva Lingas from the river sand and worshipped the idols. The idols were created with seashells (Natta in Telugu) within, hence the name Natta Rama Lingeswara. Sage Jamadagni also installed a Linga here. This Linga will be under water of River Gostani(which flows adjacent to this temple) for 10 months in a year and will be available for Darshan only during summer for 2 months. There idols within this temple are Rama Lingeswara, Lakshmana Lingeshwara and Jamadagni installed Linga. People who are unable to visit Rameshwaram in TamilNadu after their Kashi Yatra, visit Natta Rameswaram as this place also holds Linga installed by Lord Rama.

(Visited in August 2019) - Mythologically, the temple is related to the legend of Parasurama. Historically, along with Juttiga temple, this temple was rebuilt as ordered by Nawab of Golconda - Muhammad Quli Qutub Shah in c. 1583 CE. Interesting feature - The Garbha griha remains submerged in Gostani river and one can have a darshan of Mula Virat only during Summer. Natta refers to Snail/seashell in telugu language.
