★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Orissa Environment Society was established in 1982. It has launched quite a few state level awareness campaigns in the past, including that for the establishment of the Similipal Biosphere Reserve. The Society has sustained itself primarily from its membership that include the top most and active academicians of the state. All its office bearers contribute to the work and functioning of OES from their personal resources. Some of the nature based and academic activities include: monthly lectures on Environment n Science; annual conference on Env n Science (has been a platform for budding environmentalists and scholars in Universities); annual events on World Env Day, World Health Day, the Vana Mahotsav for planting trees, the wildlife week in October every year, and most such national and global other annual events. One recent fruitful campaign has been the Clean n Green Campaign involving people from villages, school children, etc. The OES observes its Foundation Day in late October. During the Corona days and shutdown, OES has continued its activities online and through webinars. On many occasions it has joined hands with the Save Elephant Foundation Trust established in 2012. The OES presents every year a number of awards and confers status of OES-Fellow to recognised individuals. I have been watching and participating in the activities of the society from late 1980s, as Life Member, then as a Patron, then as member in the Executive Body and from 2015 as (Honorary) Vice President. OES has created a mark about sustained environmental education and activities in the state of Orissa for the past 38 years. Its annual reports and lectures series from 2016 have appeared as books and available in its website. Best wishes for the society and all its members and dedicated workers. It is a prestigious place to know the people who are seriously environment conscious and concerned.
