In general, the older the national park, the more likely it is to have something spectacular; it’s also more likely to be crowded. Yosemite is stunning and should be seen, but go off-season or plan on hiking in the back country if you go during the summer. It’s beautiful in Spring and Winter, though not all the park is open. Glacier is magnificent, but lacks the photo-op aspect of Zion and Yosemite where you don’t have to do much but look around on the valley floor to see one great view after another. But Glacier’s so big that even during the peak season, you can get away from everybody else. It’s a great park for hiking—maybe the best for backpacking, though upper Yosemite has its fans. And, yes, do the Road to the Sun and stop at the Continental Divide. Try to stay on both sides of the park so you have a chance to hike on either side. Bryce is another park with an immediate wow factor—it, Zion, north side of the Grand Canyon and Arches make a nice loop. Don’t go in August. Sequoia/Kings Canyon (really one park) and Redwoods are tree park—big trees, really, really big trees. Good off-season parks. Sequoia/Kings have the more rugged great-view hikes. Redwoods is about walking through a strangely quiet shadowy forest. If you like national parks where it feels truly wild—then Denali and the other Alaskan national parks are the way to go. Know what you’re doing though. The weather and the bears aren’t a joke. Actually, that’s true of Alaska in general, you don’t need to be in a national park to be out in nature. There are moose in Anchorage. Surprisingly remote park? Channel Islands—a boat ride from Santa Barbara, but so remote that it has its own cat-sized foxes. Once the boat goes, you’re on your own. On some of the islands, you may well be the only people there. I love all those parks, but if I had to pick one park for a bucket list—it would be Volcanoes on the Big Island in Hawaii. (Okay, you won’t be driving to Hawaii.) It has my favorite short hike—5 miles across a caldera with steam coming through vents— and, depending on when you’re there, a bubbling caldera elsewhere, or lava flowing into the ocean, or through a nearby town or . . . it’s unique and it’s never the same. 431 Views Upvote Share Comment... Lowell in Massachusetts is an old mill complex and worth seeing. For the great outdoors I go to 2 extremities of the USA. Glacier in Montana and Big Bend in Texas. Given their differences (which is the whole point of National Parks) I wouldn’t rate one above the other but I’d say go to Big Bend. The reason is that in the western end of Texas you have Guadelupe National Park and just over the border in New Mexico Carlsbad Caverns (even if you don’t go into the caves arrive just before sunset for the bat flight). Maybe one other although I haven’t been there yet - Great Basin in Eastern Nevada.

This park has a very different shape. It's surrounded by home on all sides but it's in the shape of a polygon. After the regular 3 sides the 4th side has quite a few twists and turns. Although it's fun to explore. Also I wish this park was cleaner. There used to be a gym close by earlier, and after working out, a couple of rounds of this park was a good cool down.
