★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The homestead of Raja Rammohan Roy at Khanakul Hooghly. After collapsing of the original Building it was reconstructed during 1916 with Hindu-Muslim mixed architectural style. It's Foundation was laid by Pratima Devi and it's architect was Rabindranth Tegore.
According to many modern scholars of Bengal, in the beginning of the nineteenth century, there was intellectual awakening in Bengal which can be termed as truly European Renaissance.
They believe that through the influence of British rule, the educated community of Bengal became interested in various aspects of life and belief and learned to question.
Raja Ram Mohan Roy is said to be the pioneer of this renaissance. At that time, there was a foul nature called 'Sati Daha' among Hindus in Bengal. If someone died, his wife would also be burnt alive in the same funeral. Rammohan's elder brother's wife was also burnt alive in this place after his brother's death. This incident shook him deeply. He formed a social movement against this mischief. On December 4, 1829, 'Satidaha' custom was declared officially rejected in the British Presidency of British India. At that time, Lord William Bentinck was the governor of Bengal. That incident can be said that the beginning of the renaissance of Bengal and this place can be called the Starting point.
