DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE
The Regional Institute of English (RIE) was established in 1963 by Government of India Act to address the educational needs of Chandigarh, Jammu & Kashmir, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Ladakh .The functioning of the Institute is within the purview of the Chandigarh Administration.

The Institute worked and collaborated with state governments in the northern region, CBSE, Panjab University, NCERT, USIEF, British Council and RELO, American Centre, New Delhi for various research projects and teacher training programmes and the English and Foreign Languages University (EFL-U), Hyderabad.

RIE has been running many courses each with a different set of target group i.e. catering to English language needs of people at diverse levels. It runs MA English, Postgraduate Certificate in the Teaching of English (PGCTE), a 120-hour course in Personal Development for students of UT Administration colleges. One new department was introduced in the session 2016-17 called Department of Continuous Professional Development, with the objective of addressing diverse needs of English Language Teaching in schools and colleges. Since its inception, it has been catering to the educational needs of the region from primary to postgraduate level by organizing various need-based programmes. It is a pioneer institute in using multimedia for teaching English language. More than 10,000 teachers have benefitted from the various courses in the last ten years. In the past, RIE has conducted courses for International scholars also, AUSEP being the most recent one. Afghan University Student Exchange Programme (AUSEP), a four-week teacher education course in ELT for Afghan undergraduates/graduates was FP conducted in collaboration with American Centre for four consecutive years i.e. 2011-2014. In 2016, Institute was accredited by NAAC for both MA English and teacher education programmes. Presently the Institute is also covered under RUSA and has conducted many RUSA sponsored courses and workshops.

In the year 2016 -17, another in-service course introduced for the teachers of English of Chandigarh Administration was introduced to train teachers for their continuous professional development. In this course, teachers stay affiliated to the institute for 8 months to improve their teaching skills through trying out in their schools what they learn at the institute and report their success/failure of the methodology internalized at the institute on their subsequent visit to RIE.

The Regional Institute of English has a reputation for excellence in teacher- training and material production in the field of English Language Teaching. The institute has also ventured into the areas of Skill Development and Disaster Management since 2017. The faculty is engaged in constantly updating the curriculum of the courses to meet the changing needs of teacher- training and to provide teachers with specialized content relevant to professional and personal success in a rapidly changing world.
