★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Aksharam is probably the best place to learn Sanskrit, perhaps anywhere in India. This school is under the purview of Samskrita Bharati, an international institution for the promotion of Sanskrit, headquartered in New Delhi.
The school offers a range of courses, for beginners and advanced learners. Most courses are available on-line, although one has to take their exams in a regular exam center. As far as I know, exams cannot be taken on-line.
A unique course offered by Aksharam is their Sambhashana shibiram. This ten-day course enables participants to learn the basics of Sanskrit conversation, without the need to know Devanagari script.
I've attended their shibiram and taken the entire two-year course as well, and passed all four exams. After that, I'm able to read and understand classical Sanskrit works like the Gita and Valmiki Ramayana, on my own.
The faculty at Aksharam is really good. They are well-read and very patient with learners. Due to the bloody virus, I've been unable to visit Aksharam since many months. I hope to visit them regularly, when the situation improves.
The one issue I have with Aksharam and Samskrita Bharati is that they do not offer formal degree courses. I'd love to pursue an MA in Sanskrit, via on-line education, but they do not offer such courses.
I'm sure that Samskrita Bharati can get itself a "deemed University" status, if it really tries. This will make it possible for them to offer formal degree courses.
Their course content is well-structured and their on-line videos are useful. I would like them to produce videos in Indian languages other than Hindi.
That is why I have given Aksharam four stars, instead of five.
Even so, I would heartily recommend Aksharam to those who wish to learn Sanskrit, no matter what their age or religious affiliation is.
