It was in 1976 when addressing a group of doctors, His Holiness Sri Jayendra Saraswathi, the Sankaracharya of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam spoke of the need to create a hospital with a missionary spirit. His words marked the beginning of a long journey to do God's own work. On the command of His Holiness,Β Dr. Sengamedu Srinivasa Badrinath, along with a group of philanthropists founded a charitable not-for-profit eye hospital... One that would bring world-class eye care to the people of India. One that would adopt a single standard of care for all, rich or poor. One that would share the fruits of its knowledge and spread its concept of care to distant parts of this country. In a solemn function held at the premises of the Vijaya Hospital with Semmangudi Srinivasa Aiyer offering the prayer, Mrs (Dr) T Agarwal inaugurated the project. On the auspicious day of Vinayaka Chaturthi, the sixth day of September in the year 1978, the hospital came into existence. It was named Sankara Nethralaya, which means "The Temple of the Eye". The long journey for vision with a mission began. Sankara Nethralaya today has grown into a super specialty institution for ophthalmic care and receives patients from all over the country and abroad. It has gained international excellence and is acclaimed for its quality care and compassion. The Sankara Nethralaya family today has over 1400 individuals with one vision – to propagate the Nethralaya philosophy; the place of our work is an Alaya and Work will be our worship, which we shall do with sincerity, dedication and utmost love with a missionary spirit. Sankara Nethralaya has been described by Shri Nani A. Palkivala, an eminent legal expert and former Indian Ambassador to USA, as the "Best Managed Charitable Organization in India". Sir Ratan Tata Trust has observed Sankara Nethralaya as a High Performing Knowledge Institution – mission driven, a proven track record, acknowledged nationally and internationally for its expertise and excellence in Ophthalmic care with almost all eye sub-specialties, good management systems, a vibrant set of human resources and a participative system of decision-making.

I received a bad news early morning of 16th July 2018, One of our relative expired at South Kolkata. I was knowing the person and his family wants to donate eye. I do have a eye pledge card with me. The telephone no of Regional Institute of Optholmology of Kolkata to be operating by 24x7 by any staff. It was not functional. I approached the HQ Kolkata Police, they took initative and inform me telephone number of the alternative arrangement from a private authorise collector. It worked and eyes have been collected. I had requested the person who came for collection of eye to send us a confirmation of transplant of this eyes. On 19th July 2018. I received a call from Sankar Netralaya, Kolkata. I have been told that it has been transplanted. My request was to them kindly send me a sms so that I can show others and motivate them to take action when it is possible. A web based acknowledge may be ideal to inspire others on this issue.

This branch is enough to knock out the fame of Sankar Nethralaya. People know and believe about the treatment what Sankar Nethralaya, Chennai offers. But, believe me this is the worst branch of them. Medical staffs are not helpful, doctors are not interest in treatment rather are interested in making money. They asked my uncle to revisit after 15 days for tests along with Rs- 5000/- without prescribing medication. Very stupid way of handling a patient to make money. shame

The doctors may be good but the staffs attitude will spoil the brand name. Hopeless people. No chance of improvement expected also. I went as an emergency at 10 am since my wife's eyes were swollen. I waited for 15 mins and met an attitude filled receptionist sitting in the back side of the waiting hall who was relaxing watching videos in her phone. We requested an appointment urgently since my wife was not able to suffer the pain. She told that as per their 'protocol' patient have to submit an application , then initial check up and will be permitted to see doctor which will take minimum 3 hrs. There were hardly 2-3 ppl waiting there. Owing to urgency we left the place and the nearby shopkeeper suggested ua GD hospital nearby. We went there and to our surprise they treated us extremely well. The consulting fee was only Rs 200 and Dr Tasnima treated us so well. Hence I request others to visit the main centre at Mukundapur or nearby GD hospital where they have a special wing. If these staffs attitude to customers doesnot change I dont think they can survive for long.

Nice eye hospital near Wellington. The hospital is cool. ⚫️ Characteristics: 1. Good brand eye hospital. 2. Experienced Doctors are available all the time. 3. But the problem is with the staff's. Their nature and behaviour is not that gentle. They are harsh in nature. 4. Located in a narrow area but thats not a problem. Located just next to Cambridge university press. 5. Talking about costing its quite reasonable. Not that much high. 6. If you want to donate eye then contact the authority. Its a pleasure reviewing for google maps. Google helps a lot. P.S: All these views are based on my own experience. Dont get biased.

I had to visit this place for my mother. She is suffering from Glaucoma and only has blur vision through her left eye.. The staffs including the receptionist and optometrist are rude out there. Was rude not only with me but with my mother too since she was unable to follow their instruction due to her poor vision. Even the doctor was in a hurry though the place was not crowded and to add she was rude too. I would never suggest anyone to visit that place. They have other branches in kolkata however the one near Dharmatala is pathetic.

Don't get carried away by the name Sankar netralaya. Chennai branch is just the reverse of Kolkata branch. Here at Kolkata you can only witness the staff rude behaviour.
