While the Kasba Ganpati is still famously worshipped as a ‘gram daivat’ or town deity, fewer people know that the Kal Bhairavnath Mandir dates back to the same time, and once housed the people’s main deity. Today, the temple is looked after by the Ladkat family, whose forefathers — legend has it — were the ones that brought the deity here in the first place. Ramakant Daravde, a relative of the Ladkat family, told Mirror, “The old Bhairavnath temple was situated further from here. The mul purush (main ancestor) of the family visited it every day. As he grew old and could not do so, god said he would follow him home, but on the condition that he mustn’t turn back to check. He resided somewhere around Bhavani Peth of today, but because he turned to look midway, the deity established itself here in Kasba Peth.” The temple has traces of bagad (a cart with stone wheels with a pole on which a person dangles as a ritual), such as the remnants of the wheels and pole. It also houses a huge stone ball, lifted up by strongmen during a yearly competition to display their strength. A chain dangles in its premises, thought to be olden physiotherapy in some way for shoulder pains
