★ ★ ★ ★ ★ भारत के वास्तुशिल्प, मूर्तिकला, कला और शिल्प की जड़े भारतीय सभ्यता के इतिहास में बहुत दूर गहरी प्रतीत होती हैं। भारतीय मूर्तिकला आरम्भ से ही यथार्थ रूप लिए हुए है जिसमें मानव आकृतियों में प्राय: पतली कमर, लचीले अंगों और एक तरूण और संवेदनापूर्ण रूप को चित्रित किया जाता है। भारतीय मूर्तियों में पेड़-पौधों और जीव जन्तुओं से लेकर असंख्य देवी देवताओं को चित्रित किया गया है।
भारत की सिंधु घाटी सभ्यता के मोहनजोदड़ों के बड़े-बड़े जल कुण्ड प्राचीन मूर्तिकला का एक श्रेष्ठ उदाहरण हैं। दक्षिण के मंदिरों जैसे कि कांचीपुरम, मदुरै, श्रीरंगम और रामेश्वरम तथा उत्तर में वाराणसी के मंदिरों की नक्काशी की उस उत्कृष्ट कला के चिर-प्रचलित उदाहरण है जो भारत में समृद्ध हुई।
केवल यही नहीं, मध्य प्रदेश के खजुराहो मंदिर और उड़ीसा के सूर्य मंदिर में इस उत्कृष्ट कला का जीता जागता रूप है। सांची स्तूप की मूर्तिकला भी बहुत भव्य है जो तीसरी सदी ई.पू. से ही इसके आस-पास बनाए गए जंगलों (बालुस्ट्रेड्स) और तोरण द्वारों को अलंकृत कर रही हैं। मामल्लापुरम का मंदिर; सारनाथ संग्रहालय के लायन केपीटल (जहां से भारत की सरकारी मुहर का नमना तैयार किया गया था) में मोर्य की पत्थर की मूर्ति, महात्मा बुद्ध के जीवन की घटनाओं को चित्रित करने वाली अमरावती और नागर्जुनघोंडा की वास्तुशिल्पीय मूर्तियां इसके अन्य उदाहरण हैं।
हिन्दु गुफा वास्तुशिल्प की पराकाष्ठा मुम्बई के निकट एलीफेंटा गुफाओं मे देखी जा सकती है और इसी प्रकार एलोरा के हिन्दु और जैन शैल मंदिर विशेष रूप से आठवीं शताब्दी का कैलाश मंदिर वास्तुशिल्प का यह
 The roots of architecture, sculpture, art and crafts of India seem to be deep in the history of Indian civilization. Indian sculpture has taken a realistic look from the beginning, in which human figures often portray a thin waist, flexible limbs and a youthful and sensitive form. Indian sculptures portray numerous deities ranging from plants and animals.
The large water reservoirs of Mohenjodaro of Indus Valley Civilization of India are an excellent example of ancient sculpture. Temples of the temples of the south such as Kanchipuram, Madurai, Srirangam and Rameswaram and the temples of Varanasi in the north are a well-known example of the fine art that flourished in India.
Not only this, the Khajuraho temple in Madhya Pradesh and the Sun temple of Orissa have a living look of this exquisite art. The Sanchi Stupa sculpture is also very magnificent which dates back to the 3rd century BC. It is also embellishing the forests (balustrades) and pylon gates built around it. Temple of Mamallapuram; The Lion Capitol of Sarnath Museum (from where the official seal of India was greeted) is a statue of Morya, Amaravati depicting the events of the life of Mahatma Buddha and architectural sculptures of Nagarjunaghonda are other examples.
The culmination of the Hindu cave architecture can be seen in the Elephanta caves near Mumbai and similarly the Hindu and Jain rock temples of Ellora, especially the Kailash temple of the eighth century, this of architecture.
