★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This is a 12th-century temple with an important 13th century Malkapuram pillar inscription of Queen Rudrama Devi, the successor and daughter of Ganapati Deva. She ruled Telangana for decades, and famous for many public infrastructure projects among other things.
The ruined temple is relatively simple and plain, with Kakatiya-style architecture. The Nandi pillar was discovered near the temple on the ground, but it now stands in front of the temple. On top is a Nandi (beheaded after the 14th century). The inscription is in Sanskrit language, Telugu script, and is on four faces. It is long and is special. It gives a detailed account of the Kakatiya family and rulers till Rudramadevi's time. It also provides a detailed account of Shaiva Golaki matha (Shiva-related monastery) through the time of Ganapati Deva's guru named Visvesvara Shivacharya. It mentions the temples here, the monastery and the attached boarding school for Sanskrit Vedic and higher studies, along with manuscript management.
The special paragraphs are from Rudrama Devi, whose efforts set up a dedicated hospital building for medical care attached to this Shiva monastery, a second building for maternity care and a choultry for feeding the poor without discrimination of any kind. The inscription also mentions the grant of villages and tax revenue to finance the staff and medicines. This 1261 AD inscription is one of the early documented hospital systems in Asia, providing definitive evidence of the complex role Indian temples and monasteries played in their history (see Dominik Wujastyk publications on medical and nursing care in historic India for more details).
Unfortunately, this temple and monastery were ruined and mutilated in or after the 14th century. Currently, homes stand next to the temple and pillar. Yet, this special place of historic importance is worth a stop and admire the queen and the causes that has long inspired Telugu history.
