St. John's Church, originally a cathedral, was among the first public buildings erected by the East India Company after Kolkata (Calcutta) became the effective capital of British India. It is located at the North-Western corner of Raj Bhavan, and served as the Anglican Cathedral of Calcutta till 1847, when the see was transferred to St. Paul's Cathedral. Construction of the building, modelled on St Martin-in-the-Fields of London, started in 1784, with Rs 30,000 raised through a public lottery, and was completed in 1787. The land the church stands on was gifted by Maharaja Nabo Kishen Bahadur of Sobhabazar. It is the third oldest church in the city, next to the Armenian Church of the Holy Nazareth and the Old Mission Church.

I used to visit this old church frequently in my college days ages ago. Went back today to find that the old charm of the place is still not lost even that they have repainted the exterior walls to white. Highlights: The pipe organ established in the early 1900s is a spectacle. Interestingly, there is no sculpture of Jesus's crucifixion and there's a woman in the version of the Last Supper mounted inside the church! You can also see the Black Hole Memorial here.

It's a very peaceful place to offer prayers and spend time in solitude. Some famous architectural structures are situated there. Job Charnock's mausoleum are situated which is the first brick made structure in Kolkata. The black hole monument is also situated here.

Very well maintained. A nominal fee of Rs 10 for entering is charged here. Some of the areas in the compound were closed, like the Job Charnock's mausoleum, Lady Canning grave etc. But the church itself is a great place to go & enjoy the serenity that it offers.

Magnificent. Completed in 1787. The third oldest Church of Kolkata. Wonderfully maintained and landscaped. Extremely beautiful architecture. The trip comes in a 10 Rupee ticket and the people maintaining it are the most beautiful people on earth. Lady Charlotte Canning's grave is situated here coz it was shifted from the original graveyard located in Barrackpore due to technical reasons. The entire ambience is magical and this Church is a must see while in Kolkata. A pure global Church of international fame.
