★ ★ ★ ★ ★ St Paul Garden now renamed as 'Darryl D'Monte park' in memory of Darryl D'Monte who was an environmental activist and journalist. This park is located at St John Road, at St Paul road extension and D'Monte park road extension. It's a perfect green park designed keeping adept the world is currently facing - global warming and the urban heat island effect mainly caused due to concretization in Mumbai. This park has no concrete, but only consists of soil, bricks, stone, grass, trees and gym equipment. The pathway consists of natural soil bordered with bricks. The green grass and trees in the park have many benefits. Their roots help to hold the soil firmly in place to prevent soil erosion, their green parts release oxygen and water vapour thus helping to cool down the surrounding temperatures, and their roots absorb rainwater to prevent flooding and help in recharging the groundwater table. Standing with our feet on green grass also has many benefits to our wellbeing. It helps to recharge our body, brings a sense of relief, prevents insomnia, reduces inflammation, improves blood circulation, regulates heart health, and improves mental health. The pleasant sound of the birds singing in the trees brings a sense of relief. Hoping that in future, this green space stays the same and no unnecessary redevilopment or concretization is done in this park. As per National Green Tribunal (NGT) rules, not more than 5% area of a park should be concretized to safeguard the groundwater table as concrete surfaces are impermeable to water.
