Over the years, Sunita has succeeded in endorsing as well as propagating the importance of Handmade in India. Inspired by the rich traditional crafts of India her work is a unique interpretation of style that combines both fashion & tradition seamlessly. A graduate from NIFT, she is synonymous with Indian crafts & handlooms for over 2 decades. For her, it has been an ongoing journey of observing, understanding, exploring & designing within the context of various crafts practices.
Hers has also been a collaborative effort with not just the crafts people/ practitioners but also the entire community as equal stakeholders & facilitators.
Sunita Shanker’s design philosophy is to keep it clean & stylish evoking a sense of culture & origin. The clothing line is original & contemporary, at the same time pushing forward traditional skills.
Her work has been retailed from premier stores in India like Ogaan, Amethyst, Elahe, Melange to name a few. She has also retailed her work from Selfridges and The Conran Shop. She has also been designing and developing textiles and apparel for the Japanese market. Her developments have been displayed at the Smithsonian Museum, Museum of the Far East in Sweden, Takashimaya and The Silk Museum, for instance. Apart from her own label, Sunita has been a Fashion & Textile Consultant to the Ministry of Textiles where she has been travelling to villages all over the country and working with different crafts and artisans. She has also worked as a Design Consultant to CCIC. Over her career, Sunita has developed a strong bond with the artisans across India based on mutual love & respect.
