Tatsat Ventures - Gurugram
It is such a pleasure to see those nimble fingers working through the complex yarn compositions, giving shape to beautiful patterns and designs that one day will be adorned by the fashionistas of the world. Do these fingers know what they are creating? Do they receive two words of appreciation? We all get awestruck when we spend two minutes in front of a pit-loom and wonder - was it really such an intricate task to create this piece of fabric? And when we don't know, we don't care. The connoisseur is not in plenty. Without appreciation, there is no art. Without appreciation, there is no value to the sweat and blood behind that art.
We Indians are so rich yet so poor. Rich in our heritage and culture. Poor as we have never valued it. Is there any value of a diamond when it is in the ground?
We look up to others and their scale of business with which they outrun us. We want to be there. Running the race, competing with them, trying to catch up. Can we match the chinese numbers? Should we even be in a race with them? Have we ever thought of taking a pause to stop and evaluate what we have? To realise how rich we can feel with the spirit of ownership?
Or Have we ever thought of taking a pause? Of stopping to evaluate what we already have?
We have let our own selves down by forgetting these treasures that we own. We have let them die. And we have become poor. De-valued ourselves.
Handloom weaving carries certain techniques that cannot be done on mechanical looms. The industrial world cannot create masterpieces out of jamdani or patola, chanderi or brocade, mekala or Kanchipuram: the patterns, the designs and that organic feel of the fabric that the rest of the world would die to own. Is that not our prosperity gathering dust. Have we ever looked at what we have? We have our culture and heritage imbibed in every piece of textile woven with sweat and blood that no one else can give.
Let us create our own movement. Let us not run this race of fast fashion. Let us revolt to create our own pace. Let it be slow. Let it be fun. Let it be us and our own. We can take on the world with it and as always and as ever, we will have our own place which we have forgotten. Let us celebrate India Handloom Day - today and every day.
