The Bharatpur Co Operative Bank - Deeg

Deeg is an ancient historical town in Bharatpur district of Rajasthan province. Its ancient name was Durghapur. It is mentioned in the Skanda Purana as Durgha or Durghapura. Bharatpur is situated at a distance of 32 km from the city. Deeg was made the first capital of Bharatpur state by Raja Badan Singh. Once the summer residence of the rulers of Bharatpur, Deeg has served as the second capital of the region's Bharatpur state. This interesting little town is worth visiting for its unmatched fortifications, beautiful gardens and some grand palaces. This city has been in neglected condition for almost a hundred years, but even today the old palaces and other buildings of the Jat kings of Bharatpur are famous for their grand beauty. There is an earthen boundary wall around the city and there is a deep moat around it. The main gate was called 'Shah Burj'. It itself was built as a citadel. Its length and width is 50 yards. Initially it was a place for the soldiers to stay. The main fort is a mile from here, with a solid wall around it. Small bastions were built outside to protect the fort's lanes – the most famous of which was Gopalgarh, a mud fort. It is just a short distance from Shahburj. Inside the barricade of these forts was the well-furnished city- Deeg, which in its glory (in the 18th century) stood against the then astonishing capitals of the Mughals Delhi and Agra.
