Established in 1905 during the Swadeshi Movement this institution silently bears the testimonial of India's freedom struggle. It has some astonishingly rare collection of books and periodicals which serve as treats for any avid reader and antiquarian. Located adjoining to Dhakuria Station the library got a facelift couple of years back with the help of MP LAD Fund and addition of a floor has lead to expansion of the ambit of a very useful and heritage library.

It's a very old library just beside Dhakuria Railway station. Though I stay outside Kolkata but always prefer to keep my evening slot over there. The library is totally free of cost mainly run by group of highly educated senior citizens. Any public can sit , take some rest and read daily newspapers and for children story books are also available

Dhakuria Public Library is the Pride and heritage of Kolkata. The testimony of earlier Bengali intelligencia and culture. The library was established in 1904 and was peak of its glory through 1970s . Towards end of 80 s sign of decline started showing its sign. Now, what remains is mere shadow of earlier bright picture. I remember visiting the very crowded library in the 70s. The library served not scholarly purposes but every day newspaper, story, novels thrillers in English and Bengali. Was a place for the residents to catch up with their fellow residents. The library was Very much utilitirian. With time, the demand shifted. Today no body catch up with friends over a newspaper. Still the library is not shut down. Kudos to the diligent citizens of Dhakuria, they still are carrying the torch forward, because it will really be a very sad day, when it shuts down afterall.
