About The Gandharva Mahavidyalaya
Established in 1939, Gandharva Mahavidyalaya is one of the oldest and most distinguished cultural institutions of Delhi. Its role in imparting training to entire generations of music lovers and bringing Indian classical music and dance into the cultural mainstream is well acknowledged. It was founded by Pandit Vinaya Chandra Maudgalya, and is currently headed by Pandit Madhup Mudgal.
Training:
The Vidyalaya’s main objective has been to commemorate the great saint-musician and resuscitator of Hindustani music, Pandit Vishnu Digambar Paluskar, and to keep up the ideals set down by him in order to popularize Indian classical music amongst the masses through:
• modernized methods of instruction
• training of qualified teachers, and
• restoring music its rightful place as an integral part of our culture.
Courses of Study
Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, New Delhi, is affiliated to Akhil Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Mandal, Mumbai. Theoretical and practical training is imparted in the following subjects:
a) Hindustani Music
i. Vocal
ii. instrumental (Sitar, Flute, Tabla and Harmonium)
b) Indian classical dances
Odissi, Kathak, Bharatanatyam
The courses of study followed by the Vidyalaya are those approved by the Akhil Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Mandal, Mumbai:
1. Prarambhik (Elementary)
2. Praveshika (Pratham and Purna)
3. Madhyama (Pratham and Purna)
4. Visharad (Pratham and Purna)
5. Alankar (Pratham and Purna)
Note for New Admissions (2022 batch):
Examinations will not be conducted at the Vidyalaya. Students wishing to appear for exams will have
to do so privately at other examination centres. However, training will be provided at the Vidyalaya from Prarambhik to Alankar Purna.
Special lessons and lecture-cum-demonstrations by visiting artistes and scholars of music are arranged from time to time for the benefit of the students. Special training is imparted to the students in the art of performing in public by way of monthly concerts of music, arranged under the guidance of the teachers.
