At Murshidabad this is must visit place.
KATRA means small bazaar or Market, Earlier this place was a vegetable Market with a caravanserai, inn where traveler rests . In 18th century it was one of the big caravanserais in Indian subcontinent. It was a caravanserai and mosque. This was built in 18th century.
In this brick built Mosque at a same time 700 persons used to read Quran. Those rooms are along the huge courtyard in front of these rooms. Four big miners stand at the four corners. These are octagonal in plan and taper upwards.. The whole mosque is quadrangular in shape, the whole mosque has no pillar support but it has been given support by a raised platform below the mosque or by several arches.
The mosque has however been destroyed in the 1897 earthquake. Each minar has a winding staircase which leads to the top, one can see a major part of the city from there. At the two ends of the mosque, two minaret measuring 70 feet high, still exist to date in a dilapidated condition, they had domes which were destroyed in the 1897 earthquake.
Now climbing in minaret is not allowed
Murshid Quli Khan on reaching old age, expressed his desire to construct his tomb adjacent to a mosque .He also expressed that whoever came to see the mosque, dust from their foot should fall on this grave so as to get some solace, peace.
Later top of the grave was concretized by ASI. His grave is not cemented but top of it still covered with mud.
As Murshid Quli Khan was born in Hindu family and later sold to Farsi, in this mosque there is a small Hindu Shiva temple still there in dilapidated condition.
Once you reach the place local guides will rush. You can take guide. they charge 50 to 100INR . You also should go through the history before hand.
How to reach: Murshidabad is well connected with all major railway station in west Bengal . By road from Calcutta it is 235km , approximately 5 to 5hrs 30 min journey . en-route you can enjoy Farakka barrage
