★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Adi Chitteshwari Temple, established in 1610 by the then zamindar Manohar Ghosh, is a Durga temple close to Kashipur Ghat. The original temple, however, was built much earlier by Chitey—the most notorious bandit of the region, who offered human sacrifices at the temple. The Durga idol was carved out from a block of neem wood that he found on the river bank. After his death the temple lay abandoned in the forest until 1586 when a tantrik named Nrishingha Brahmachari arrived here and revived the puja. Building the temple and subsequently Chitpur Road (named after the temple), made travel safer in the area which was once a dacoit-infested jungle. As the city developed, the road became a symbolic axis of its growth, settled by nearly every community with which the native people had trade links.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Adi chitteshwari Durga mandir is one of the oldest temple in Kolkata and West Bengal. Established in the year of 1610. The deity here is maa Durga with ten hands , built with neem wood, the idol is so beautiful. This is the fabled idol one worshipped by Chite, the fabled dacoit. Later it was forgotten for years. On 1585 AD the idol was rediscovered.
Temple complex is old but serene and calm and utterly clean. Outside road is very congested. ASI should take initiative to preserve the history

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Very peaceful and powerful place. There is a panch munda asana just behind the temple. There are temples dedicated to Maa Shitala , Sri Krishna. Inside the Sri Krishna temple one can see holy implements for tantric worship. The temple is not maintained well maybe because of limited visits . There were human sacrifices at one time . The place for such sacrifice can still be seen between the Ma Durga temple and Naat mansur the Shiva Lingam is very large and comically shaped on the top. Very rare lingam and myst have been used for special tantric rites. Practitioners of tantra method should visit the temple regularly. Perhaps with their continual usage of the panch munda asana it will regain its strength. The Pandit who tends the temple is a very shy and quiet man. Devotees and interested persons should visit the temple regularly and Ma permitting it will again become a major centre for shakti worship. Many devotees would have attained darshan here. The magic associated with such places still exists here. The Ma Shitala temple , The Durga temple , the Ram Sita temple , the Shiva lingam are power spots which need to be revived with daily darshan.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ It was eighty years before Job Charnock docked in Calcutta (Kolkata) a notorious or famous brigand (or Dakat in Bengali) built an idol of Neem wood which is practically termite proof to propitiate Goddess Durga. After his death, it fell upon Manohar Ghosh to construct a temple in 1610 AD to install the idol in the sanctum. Thus was the legend of Adi Chitteswari Mandir or temple came into being. The wood of the idol has survived termites and vagaries of weather and is one of the oldest exhibit of sculpture of Kolkata. The name too of Chite the robber lives on as Chitpore Road.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ One of the oldest durga idol found in kolkata is worshiped in this temple. The name Chitteswari was given to this Devi Durga as she was worshiped by the infamous Chite dacoit who used to please her with human sacrifice. The idol is made of Neem wood and thought to be of same age of Kalighat's Maa Kali. The temple itself is more than 400 years old and the age of the idol is also thought to be unresolved.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This is the oldest Hindu temple of Kolkata and Goddess Chitteswari Durga idol has been installed in the sanctum. Beautiful place for daily worship. Gun and shell factory is situated just opposite side of this temple, so be careful while taking photograph of the temple. The security guards of the gun and shell factory are very rude. They misbehave with the photographers if they found taking photos of the temple.
