One of the oldest handicraft shop in Banglore. Sitting in a corner of Utility Building, one of Bengaluru’s oldest commercial buildings, is a shop named Chandini, filled with 3,000 beautifully crafted idols by Sultan Rahim Thariani, the owner. This shop specialises in Ganesha idols. Thariani, who was born and brought up in Mumbai, says, β€œMy interest in Ganesha idols was due to the influence of Mumbai’s culture, where every year, people take part in the Ganesha Chaturti. Ganesha was always on my mind, and when I got a chance to make sculptures, I jumped at it.” Thariani then moved to Bengaluru, for its β€˜garden city’ tag, adapted himself to the environment here and established a shop in 1992. β€œI first started an antiques store, but one day, an artisan named Dwarkanath came to see me and he showed me a Ganesha idol. It was different from the traditional idols I’ve seen. I was intrigued and asked him if these kind of idols would offend people, to which he said that the specialty of Ganesha is that the more forms you give him, the more people love it,” says Thariani. He adds, β€œThat is when I decided that I will start designing Ganesha idols. Dwarkanath sculpted the idols in six months, and we were all over town. I do not remember when and how, but I slowly developed a passion for the arts and devoted my time to collecting and selling beautifully crafted pieces.” Some of his popular idols are Ganesha on a swing, Ganesh with a laptop and telescope. The bestselling idols are that of Ganesha, but hsi shop is also famous for Maa Durga, Buddha and Sai Baba. β€œMy inspiration is Ganesh itself. The first idol I had designed was Ganesha with Shiv Linga. It was a huge success. The happiness of my customers while purchasing it became a driving force for me.” He says his favourite Ganesha idol is The Pied Pieper. The 67-year-old self-taught artist is also passionate about poetry (shayari) and ghazals. Expresing his sadness over the fact that people are no longer interested in art, he says, β€œIt’s not the fault of the present generation, but there is a lot of insecurity among us all, which has made us self-centred, and disinterested in what’s going on around us.”When asked if he faced any criticism selling Ganesha idols despite being a Muslim, he said he never did - from his own community or outside.

I have been coming the Chandni gallery for over 7 years now. And have adorned my house and my friend's houses with some beautiful artifacts from here. The quality and the workmanship is outstanding and I will refer Chandni to everyone and anyone who is looking for a gift or something for your home. These pieces will move from one generation to another. And the staff is extremely courteous and helpful.

My favourite place to buy gifts in metal or wood, and it is now more than 20 years that I have been a customer. Sultan, who owns Chandni, has become a good friend and trusted advisor. This shop is famous for unique Ganesh idols in a variety of materials - metal, wood and stone. Sultan designs these and gets them made to his specifications. Their Dhrishti Ganesha made with powdered semi-precious stones was a big hit with my relatives when we used it as a takeaway gift at a function. Ganesh on a swing (in brass) has a pride of place in many of my friends' houses. The little idols in copper have intricate details and have become something of a collection at home. The white cedar elephants (with and without howdah) are another great gift. The many exquisite lamps and wall hangings are another big draw. Chandni is located on the first floor of the Utility Buildings complex of M G Road, next to Mayo Hall. Parking for cars is available in the basement.
