★ ★ ★ ★ ★ During the early 19th century, there was a large number of Goan and other Catholics in the Sealdah area. For various reasons their number have dwindled over the years. Despite the entire area then being marshy and swarming with mosquitoes and other pests, merchants used to come from far off places to trade in various commodities. They would come through the wetlands that emptied into Sundarbans. It is said that even Job Charnock had a shed here to do business. There was a large banyan tree under which the traders used to come and sit and hence the name 'Baithak-khana'. It was not only the British but also the Portugese who would come here. The church was built with charities from one Mrs Garcia Elizabeth for the indigent Catholic community of the area, At the back of the Church is a marble plaque in memory of Fransisco D'Assis who was born in New Goa in 1805 and served as Assistant Vicar of the Church from 1845 to 1854. Besides this there is an interesting inscription in Portugese mentioning the name of Garcia, apparently installed in 1818. The architecture is remarkable for a church built over 200 years ago The structure is built in such a way that despite the extremely noisy neighbourhood the church is sound-proof and silence always reigns in the main section. The main attraction of the Church, is a statue of 'Our Lady', known as 'Mother of Mercy' and believed to be the city's oldest Marian shrine. A Marian shrine is a shrine marking an apparition or other miracle ascribed to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Such locales are often the destination of pilgrimage. No wonder thst it is perhaps the only Church where large number of non-Christians come every day to pray.
